New ICANN rules... stop the paranoia you're domains will not disappear! READ>>>

NatNet was so kind to finally clear it up for the paranoia webmasters

With regard to the rumors that this new policy will make domain slamming / hijacking / stealing easier, this is simply not true. As the owner of the domain, you must still confirm a transfer with the gaining registrar in order for the transfer to take place.

WickedVenus 11-12-2004 02:35 PM

Yeah i locked mine to but this is good to know!!

William-Xfactor 11-12-2004 03:42 PM

Actually I think it would be very easy to lose your domains IF THEY ARE NOT LOCKED!

For example what if the email sent ?like the one below? never arrived, for whatever reason ?Spam filter perhaps? Say bye bye to your domain.

Attention: William *******
Re: Transfer of ***************

GoDaddy.com received notification on 11/11/2004 that you have requested a transfer to another domain name registrar. If you want to proceed with this transfer, you do not need to respond to this message. If you wish to cancel the transfer, you must do so before 15-Nov-04.

To CANCEL the transfer:
Go to ******************************** and log in if prompted with your username and password. Click the check box by the domain, and click the Decline button.

Regards
LOCK YOUR DOMAINS NOW!

I believe either thehun.com or thehun.net has been hijacked before. Thehun was able to get it back.

I think NatNet and many of the "not to worry" people may not be that familiar with attempted and successful hijackings in the last couple years. It's true, you're *supposed* to need to confirm approval with the gaining registrar, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to worry about. There are hundreds (thousands? ICANN's list seems very outdated) of ICANN-accredited registrars now, most are okay, but some are shady, and others are just careless. With so much money to be made fraudulantly, you can count on some of the careless or shady registrars facillitating hijack attempts. Some registrars have had security flaws in transfer request approval for a long time, which will only now be exploited.

xenophobic 11-12-2004 04:42 PM

don't post this yet, GODADDY still have hundreds of people to milk for 99 cents to lock their domains out of fear.

of course fraudulent hijackings are never totally out of the question. It's smart if people just lock their domains by default it would save a lotta trouble.

The last few days a lot of people were going berserk over the fact that ICANN changed the rules and made it look like they wanna promote domain hijacking. Truth is it's not easier nor harder :2 cents:

slavdogg 11-12-2004 04:44 PM

IT HAS BEGUN

3 transfer hijack requests came in today

and arg is right
NatNet should be more careful with they suggestions

slavdogg 11-12-2004 04:48 PM

here is an sneakiest way to hijack domains
you get a transfer request email for you to confirm the transfer.
you click on the link, log in to cancel or deny the transfer.
When what you're actually doing is confirming. BOOM, your domain is gone.
Not all transfer requests fuction the same way, some simply require you to click on the link in your email without any further action.

Can you recommend a registrar like this?

I have some issues with domains with invalid whois info, and I want to fuck with them.

DO NOT stop the paranoia people.

LOCK your domains.

This NATNET article assumes that the legitimate owner will be the one initiating the xfer to NATNET and says that you have to confirm your request at the new registrar before they send a request to the old registrar to xfer your domain.

So... what... a domain thief isn't going to confirm the request from the new registrar that they just initiated?

:1orglaugh

bizmak 11-12-2004 06:40 PM

get emm locked and that's it

Taboo 11-12-2004 07:17 PM

Bottom line... LOCK YOUR DOMAINS. Those that advise us to remain calm and not worry, aren't looking at this from all angles.

Nothing wrong with being overly-cautious protecting your domains. and Slav is correct, the hijack attempts have already started.

Plus, be EXTRA careful if you're buying domains in private deals.

ICANN is our worst enemy.

good luck to everyone.

The request goes to the email on file on the domain..
