HELP? Windows XP keeps restarting over and over again at startup...

So I just got my new machine all hooked up and installed xp pro and sp1 and i was installing some stuff when the computer stopped responding. So I restarted, and at the "windows xp" startup screen it all the sudden reboots.... then it gets to the same black windows xp startup screen and reboots, and over and over again....

I have booted into safe mode and it does the same thing. I cant boot off the xp cd. I have no clue whats going on.

could this be a virus of some sort?

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez help me. :helpme

new memory installed?

Mr.Fiction 12-29-2003 01:24 AM

If it's a new machine, how would you have gotten a virus?

Maybe it's a conflict - video card, USB, or something?

Morgan 12-29-2003 01:25 AM

brand new computer. just installed xp pro today. everything was working fine until i installed sp1 and tried to activate windows.

You could open the case and re-seat all PCI/AGP cards, if you think its a hardware issue... but it doesnt sound like one. Its possible though.

Easy. Just install Linux. :1orglaugh

Sounds like you toasted your MBR. Make a boot disk or go into BIOS and make sure that booting from CD is enabled.

What kind of computer is this? If it's HP, Compaq, Gateway, they have utilities and crap that you can either try or need to disable to really work on it.

I have my xp pro disk (not pirated) but i lost the book with the serial. I have the same OS installed on this computer im using now so I located my serial number and used the same one. MS will detect 2 pc's using the same serial if both are online and will automatically send request to purchase the 2nd copy. Only, I didnt want to wait to deal with that stuff so i downloaded some activation bypass proggy to get it over with. (my bad). while using it, the computer quit responding so i restarted it. thats when this error started. I am wondering if that stupid crack was a virus and dont feel like explaining this to the MS techs.

You you fucked up your activation key your gonna proably have to do an in place install.

http://tinyurl.com/1h3r

If its not booting for the CD you need to goto you bios and set the CDrom as the primary boot device.

EDIT: BLah fixed that link

Morgan 12-29-2003 01:35 AM

k, im booted up on the cd.... going to go into repair

Morgan 12-29-2003 01:35 AM

I use non activation version of XPPro so I don't know if it is fixable....

But if you goto this place http://tinyurl.com/33sd and click on "How To Run a Repair Install" it will tell you have to install windows OVER your existing copy.... It keeps all your settings and users. If that doesnt work then I don't know.

Personally I'd do a full delete and repartition of your HD, fdisk /mbr, and then reinstall.

Or just install superior open source OS with no DRM bullshit. :winkwink:

If it was that you get a rpc error before shut down...still wondering if crack you used had you manually change the reg?

Morgan 12-29-2003 02:42 AM

not sure... i suck at win tech shit.

Morgan 12-29-2003 02:43 AM

but no... i dont think it was manual. it was doing everything for me.. and froze halfway through.

irishfury 12-29-2003 02:44 AM

Just wondering cause a friend had same thing happen to him exact way you describe and his crack had him edit the win val key....
