Dmoz Collecting Email Addresses

Do you think they will be using these to send out spam at some point?

How long has this been the case with them?

So why collect them then :Graucho

DMOZ Editors have access to all submission information including the email addresses :(

Time to apply to be a DMOZ editor i think :Graucho

This is true but why collect them at all?

I remember some 3 months ago when i submitted to Dmoz not having to enter a valid email address.

Seems there is potentially more to this than meets the eye initially :2 cents:

"All" the information consists of your email address, the URL submitted and your IP. Not exactly a lot of sensitive information.

Editors are encouraged to contact site owners if something is wrong with a submission. Also, it isn't like there is some "harvest email addresses" button in the editor control panel. You'd have to go through thousands of individual submissions highlighting and CTRL-Cing email addresses.

no, its just to help prevent people from spamming the ODP which has become a very common occurance as of late, my mom is a meta editor there, i'll see what i can dig up on it

I was an ODP/DMOZ editor for quite some time. Biggest problem I had was webmasters would never send us a password to review their site. In order to be listed under membership sites the editor is supposed to look it over.

Personally, I never even kept a record of the submissions but the information is kept online for any editor to look at.
