Plasma TV Question

Ok Im getting THIS

and plan to get a HDTV satellite dish/receiver.

Is that all I need to make that plasma HDTV? It says it can receive the signal.

Thanks!

looks like a nice price. i just bought my mom a 40 inch sony hdtv (picture-tubed based) and it was more money.

for less money you can get a dlp projector and have up to a 200 inch picture

I dont have a choice... it has to be plasma and it has to be 37'... its going into a recessed space.

just need to know what to do to make it hdtv.... is the dish and hdtv box enough?

that should work?

the resolution is only 852x480

you should really look for one with 1,024 X 1,024 Resolution

more lines.. the more HDTV it will be... (if that makes sense)...

looks like it is set up to recieve and decode the signal.. but it may be limited on resolution to give a true HDTV pic....

and yes the DLP projector is prolly the best pic you can get:2 cents:

You need to make sure it is truly CAPABLE of decoding high definition signals. From what I read..it doesn't appear to be.
It says it has "capabilities"..but that's vague.

The thing I hope you noticed is that most plasma tv's like this one do not have an internal tuner..so you will have to rely on a vcr as your tuner.

Umm..you're getting satellite too...know nothing about that technology so maybe your satellite deal gives you a decoder to use as a tuner. If not..then you're dependent on the quality of your vcr to bring in the quality your plasma is capable of.

Other than local newscasts, and one hbo & showtime channel (and I think there were a couple of fox shows), what IS being shown in high defintion these days?

yes that HD satelite receiver will give you HD.

Somethings to keep in mind. plasma has issues still it doesnt weather well. As you use it pixels stop working until it eventrually becomes noticable.

Front projection is the best picture. For 37" i would get a LCD not plasma.

I just bought a rear projection 65" for $3000 damn good picture. I can use front projection because I get too much light.

But to answer yoru question about satelite recievers. In the fall they are coming out with an HD direct tv reciever with tivo. Thats what I'm waiting for. If you havent used tivo you dont know what your missing.

what price do good DLP front projectors start at?

Those Sony XBR HDTV's are unbeatable. I've got the 36" and it blows plasma away.

Weighs a ton though.

yep, that's why i got it. beautiful screen.

but yeah, the 40 inch weighs over 300lbs. it was delivered last Wednesday - apparently they had major problems getting it in the house. i wasn't there lol.

I happen to have a spare dlp projector sitting right here... only 77 hours of use on it... been trying to sell it because I have 2 of them

The DLP's do produce an even higher quality picture than plasma units do.

Sony has a large screen LCD that is pretty impressive also.

It's a hard choice, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. They are all superior by leaps and bounds over standard TV's.

Panasonics have the best contrast I've seen. You get solid rich black with them, which helps to give more dimension to the picture.

Mitsubishi's ultra high end series, I think its called diamondtron, puts out a beautiful picture.

Hitachi's are known for their exceptional brightness if you like that style.

But, out of the various types out there DLP is the current king of the hill in terms of color reproduction, clarity and sharpness.

Wow, I like that TV...

Plasmas are also notorious for burn-in. Far worse than any other display type. Something to consider if you ever planned to hook a PC into it, play games, etc.

thewebgarage 05-18-2003 05:44 PM

The front projection teli that has the best price for the quality is the new sharp. Everyone loves it. Its simply beautiful. And can go up to 200 inches.

If your looking at getting a tv smaller than 40 inches. And you want the best. Sony XBR its such an amazing picture. Best way to review it is perfect. Sure plasma is cool but the pictures cant be compared.

I'm sure soon enough there will be plasma tv as good as the xbr but its just not there yet. Having HD helps.
