That it was.

I read awhile back that he improvised much of the dialogue for his drill instructor character in the movie, drawing on his real-life career as a marine.

I heard him on Adam Carolla's podcast a little while back. I had always been a fan of his but didn't know much about him until then. He has had an interesting life. He ran a few brothels in Okinawa and was in Apocolypse Now just to name a few.

I am seeing a lot of this in the news - some people are saying 1972, others 1974. The book it was based on (The Short Timers) was published in 1979, and the movie not until 1987.

I'm not sure where these dates are coming from.

Says he died of complications of pneumonia. Wonder why he didn't get a vaccination for pneumonia? Might of saved his life. Any anti-vaxxers want to weigh in on that?

WikiPedia states Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 British-American war film.

Full metal jacket was truly an epic movie. RIP

I had the opportunity to meet him a few times over the past years. He will be missed at Bravery Brewing for sure.

RIP Gunny

Yep, it was so real it took me right back to my days in military basic training...it was eerily identical in almost all respects. Even the look of the barracks interior.

bronco67 04-16-2018 12:58 PM

He's only 74? He looked like an old-ass motherfucker in Full Metal Jacket 30 years ago.

CaptainHowdy 04-16-2018 12:59 PM

A memorable character indeed ...

He was one of a kind. No one will ever forget the amazing feeling while watching him chew new assholes in Full Metal Jacket.

Need to have my son watch that one. But might wait another year or so.
