EBT Benefits

Is anyone familiar with the rules? I just read a complaint online from a person claiming Jack In The Box overcharged her for food.

Electronic benefit transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows state welfare departments to issue benefits via a magnetically encoded payment card, used in the United States.

Are welfare payments meant for fast food? It doesn’t seem right that fast food can be bought with tax dollars. They get food stamp cards too, right?

Something is wrong with this picture.

EBT (food stamps) can't be used for food that is already cooked like fast food. However, welfare money now goes on cards as well and it can be used for anything.

EBT can buy cooked food; but can't buy hot ready to serve food.
All food in a can, bread, cereal and lunch meat is cooked so not being able to buy cooked food can't work.

As I recall driving through various CA cities and seeing some sign in the windows of well known fast food brands saying they accept EBT, I did a quick Google search and found this ...

EBT Restaurant Meals Program

I am absolutely disgusted by this abuse. The Fast Food industry successfully lobbied for this inclusion. I am not against "hot prepared meals" for those that cannot prepare one for themselves, and for that there are numerous Community Centers offering them, and also a Meals On Wheels program.

Look at the list of participating restaurants for LA County ->http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/dpss/237774_All.pdf

It's only for homeless, disabled and elderly.
That makes a lot of sense actually.

Right. Cooked wasn't the correct word. Prepared is more accurate. What's interesting is I see the EBT sign at Papa Murphy's pizza. So you can use EBT to buy a take and bake pizza, but not to buy a pizza that is cooked.
