Dog meat will be banned at an annual Chinese festival after activists campaigned to stop millions of animals being stolen and bludgeoned to death each year.

The government is set to prohibit restaurants, street vendors and market traders from selling dog meat at the barbaric Yulin festival.

It is believed the ban will come into effect on June 15 - one week before the festival begins - and strictly enforced by fines of up to 100,000 yuan and risk of arrest.

I think it is 30 years since I first heard how they were skinning cats alive and throwing them into boiling water because the chock would make the meat better. I was 9 and hoped it wasn't true. Can't believe anyone today can treat living creatures like that.

Same here. My first exposure was flipping through channels and Bam! a live cat being picked up , put on a hook, and a cooking torch used to burn it's fur off, then it being quickly dunked in boiling oil, thrashing around, taken out , slammed down on the chopping block, all 4 paws chopped, then the rest of it, head intact. It was some national geographic show about foreign cuisine. Completely unnecessary torture.
