Quantum Locking Levitation - Mind Blown

How can a super-thin 3-inch disk levitate something 70,000 times its own weight? In a riveting demonstration, Boaz Almog shows how a phenomenon known as quantum locking allows a superconductor disk to float over a magnetic rail ? completely frictionlessly and with zero energy loss.

That is incredibly cool. Is that the same kind of technolgy they were talking about for this new rail system?

Amazing :thumbsup

this has been talked about for some time I think... the difference being in the past there was little understanding of the quantum aspect of 'super conductors' and while there might not be energy loss on the super conductor floating over the magnet there is a great amount of energy spent on the cooling and much energy is lost at that point in the equation :2 cents:

very interesting

This is the biggest train using it until now:

This is another technology:

This is aliens:

This is magics:

No I don't think so or at least not yet. I wish...!

Maybe, but you might be missing the point... one thing to keep in mind is that there is no mechanical processes going on here... its more like a state of matter. It's "material" that under the right conditions can do something amazing.

But besides this, there's already work under way to to make super conductors work at room temperature, no cooling necessary. When they figure that out, it will change everything.

We are living in some freaking amazing times. Computers, flat screens, robots on mars, and it looks like we're right on the edge of some major scientific advancements... man I love science.

The singularity. I hope it's true, though it could be opening Pandora's box and end up destroying us one day.

Science is very cool. It is a shame that big biz drives intuition.

It was ELon Musk's Hyperloop I was thinking of but I don't think it uses the same technology.

DigitalPimpNetwork 04-07-2014 03:34 PM

That is so cooool!

While that is a possibility, the lack of science and technology has been shown to be very effective at destroying us as well.

That tech looks pretty cool.

Mark I haven't missed the point at all.. superconductors take HUGE amounts of energy to cool to '- what the fuck ever' and when they get superconductors to work at room temperature won't even be relevant because we will be using fusion anyway

do you realize the implications of your statement? you think a bunch of assholes on welfare smoking crack are going to figure that shit out and then build it?

Rmagnus 04-09-2014 08:32 PM

it's alien technology

It doesn't. Musk's is simple magnetic levitation inside a vacuum.

No, you are missing Beaners point too. Landing Man on the moon wasn't really driven by innovation. It was "driven" by cold war hysteria and the head to beat the USSR. Love it or hate it, Commercialism and others drivers are a major requirement to technological innovation.

Nope. 100% pure human awesomeness.
