Lace 09-22-2012 05:51 PM

So...I'm quitting smoking.

Finally deciding to try to kick the nearly ten year old habit of smoking cigarettes. More so for my daughter, so her daddy can live to see her grow up.

I've picked up dip for the time being to kind of wean myself off. I'm on day three now and no cigs. Not a big fan of dip, so I'll be kicking that sooner than later. Wife brought home a nicotine patch from work, and that really didn't do a whole lot in my opinion. I've had the gum before and didn't care for it.

Going to pick up a few packs of chewing gum and some fruit to keep myself from eating everything in the house. :1orglaugh

Any tips from anyone else who has quit? Going to be pretty hard while working from home and staying idle for so long.

Zuzana Designs 09-22-2012 05:55 PM

It will be the best thing you could do for yourself and your daughter. I stopped 7 years ago and I feel great and can't believe I ever did it. I started when I was in the Army and quit when my son asked me to.

Helix 09-22-2012 06:04 PM

That's how I did it. Used dip to break the cig habit and then dropped the dip after the cig urges went away.

ErectMedia 09-22-2012 06:05 PM

buy lots of snacks, gum, pretzel rods, etc... so ya got something to munch on, alternatively you can just eat pussy all day :thumbsup I quit cold turkey for over a year just threw the shit out and said fuck you mother fuckin smokes :1orglaugh Had a stressful time and drove my ass and grabbed a pack. Tastes like absolute shit after quitting for a year but after a few it's like old times again. :1orglaugh Quitting is easy, staying quit for me is the bitch, good luck :thumbsup

I'm sure. My wife doesn't smoke either, and she's not too fond of it.

That's the plan. I don't get much off the dip either, but for now it keeps my mind off of it. If I get an urge to smoke a cigarette, I just put a lip in.

Yup. I'll be running to the store tomorrow to pickup a bunch of stuff. Definitely need to do it for good this time. :thumbsup

I bought two different versions of e-cigs and didn't care much for them. They didn't do anything. I just kept puffing and killed the cartridges quicker than anything. :(

livexxx 09-22-2012 06:30 PM

what is a dip?

Spunky 09-22-2012 06:53 PM

After smoking over 35 years,I haven't had a smoke in 3 months.Do the e-cig with 24mg Nicotine oil at first to get over the edge.then ween down with a 12 mg oil.It worked for me

SilentKnight 09-22-2012 07:09 PM

Try and change up your daily routine, too - avoid doing things that trigger the urge to light up.

I found it rather difficult to have a beer without getting the urge to smoke...so when I first quit I avoided beer (damn near killed me, lol). But beer and cigs were synonymous with me, so I had to change my habits.

I'd say good luck - but hopefully luck won't be a factor.

mechanicvirus 09-22-2012 07:13 PM

Nicotine is stronger than heroin, be careful.

CDSmith 09-22-2012 07:26 PM

Best decision you could make. Good luck.

Here's an inspirational quote to help speed you on your way...

Cold turkey is the way I quit. I found that using anything that contained nicotine was not helpful. You have been addicted long enough that you can expect to have a craving for a cigarette...probably for at least the number of years you smoked. Just say no.

i<3teens 09-22-2012 08:10 PM

i dont think switching it to dip is going to do ya good then ur just going to feene for that... i can't stop smoking yet too much stress or stupid people around. i would go nuts without nicotene i have been in the hospital before and the nicotene patch worked for me, but if you can have a cigg your going to smoke one ! I wish u luck tho

seeme 09-22-2012 08:39 PM

Believe it or not I switched to smoking just weed then quit weed. Now I smoke nothing! Might be easier this way... not recommending it though :)

cosis 09-22-2012 08:54 PM

Chantix worked wonders for me and I smoked 2 packs a day. Aside from nightmares I didn't have any side effects

brassmonkey 09-22-2012 09:32 PM

get some b-12 and make fresh juice if you can. good luck man. :)

arock10 09-22-2012 10:21 PM

come back to #webmasterz we'll beat the addiction out of you

I quit smoking a little over 2 months ago with the help of Allen Carr and r/stopsmoking

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Carr
http://www.reddit.com/r/stopsmoking/

In the end quitting smoking is not hard at all it is only other people that want to make you believe it is hard. This is a common mistake people make when trying to quit. Thinking that it is hard and having everybody around you saying it is hard will actually only make it hard.

This is part of Allen Carrs way of thinking he has helped many people quit smoking. I now have been smokefree for 2 months after having smoked a pack a day for over 15 years.

lucas131 09-23-2012 02:35 AM

just have luck and stay strong, for everyone works something else, so find it and do it! :thumbsup

NeophyteUK 09-23-2012 02:42 AM

This was the best way for me to kick it, granted I hadn't been smoking for as long as you guys about 7 years and you have to find things to do, as soon as the mind goes idle boom, thats the hole a smoke can fill, change your routine, get snacks, enrol in other things just keep yourself busy while you change your body round.

Good luck man. Just fuel the will power with praise for yourself to (sounds crap but it works, it IS the best thing you're going to do)

After eating is really hard, and yes, drinking ignites that fire. I won't quit eating, but I'm definitely not going to be drinking for a bit. I smoked like a chimney when I drank. :(

I'm not fond of dip. I think it's disgusting as hell to be honest. It's just something to get my mind off of things and keep a little nicotine in my system for now.

Tried that before. Didn't last long. Lol. Plus, I don't smoke but once in a blue moon now.

I've heard good and bad stories about Chantix. I've seen people quit with it, and quit taking it. Before going to the doctor on our shitty health plan, I'll try everything else I can.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. Working from a home office, I can get bored extremely quickly...and I like taking my hourly breaks for a smoke. It's nice to get away from the computer for a few minutes.

Thanks! Going to be a long journey. :1orglaugh

smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarettes. Having said that my dirty little secret is a one tin a day dip habit for... OMFG!!! its been 31 years!!!

I switched from Kodiak which was doing terrible things to the inside of my mouth.... to a knock off cheap brand called Redseal... milder flavor and no more of the 'bad stuff' that was going on between my cheek and gum heh heh

biskoppen 09-23-2012 06:39 AM

I've never understood how an adult could smoke to begin with..

~Ray 09-23-2012 06:49 AM

takes 72 hours for nicotine to get out of your system.

3 days, 2 fits(tantrums) per day

you must endure 6 fits(tantrums) to quit smoking

Haha. I've got some cheeeaaapppp shit now. $1.39/can for Longhorn. Makes it taste even shittier. :1orglaugh

I used to dip once in a blue moon and would pickup a can of Skoal, but at about $4.50-5 a can, I'll stick to the cheap stuff for now to get me through.

I started in high school. Was the "cool" thing to do! But to each his own. I'm on my way to being smoke free!

Yup. Dip is helping for now but once I stop that, I'm sure I'll have some fits. Bought some St Johns Wart and some other herbal mood stabilizers to help me too. Hopefully it works!

the b-12 shots would be best but you can hit up your local health food store. don't be afraid your piss will turn bright yellow :1orglaugh its good for your body get all that smoke out. make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day (pint size) best way to get rid of the jitters is flush that crap out of your blood. :2 cents:

sarettah 09-23-2012 11:44 AM

I had my last cigarette 29 days ago after smoking for 35 or 36 years. Been doing an e-cig and so far I haven't killed anybody so it must be working.

:thumbsup

Whenever you want a cigarette, roll a joint.

lucas131 09-23-2012 11:47 AM

btw, stopped smoking almost two years ago. had a bad feeling one day and smoking was the first i cutted off, and it was really critical, so i knew i will never do it again ... and, i must say, i feel better, just alcohol is taking the possition, so not much about my health changed ... :Oh crap

I don't know what quality you get but I don't think I could handle 20 joints a day with what I get.

Also, smoking pot is one of my cigarette triggers. I originally started smoking cigs to cover the fact that i was smoking pot.

Quit almost 1.5 years ago cold turkey when we found out my GF was pregnant. Smoked for 15 or so years.

Feeling great however it took about 8 months till I stopped thinking about it daily. Now when I drink I feel the desire coming up some times but since we can't smoke in bars and clubs anymore its easier to fight.

@Lace my granfather smoked almost a carton a day for more than 50 years , he went to the doctor one day came home and quit , must of heard something life altering , he used to suck on liquorish sticks whenever he had an urge just put it in his mouth, he's been smoke free for about ten years now ! and that is unbelievable after smoking that much a day for a very long time , I wish you well!

One of these days I will try to quit myself my grandmother died of emphysema it was terrible watching her in her final days , I know if I don't stop some day I will be like that and the site was not worth it I wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy!
