I can't believe that people still use ICQ. I remember when that shit came out. So let me ask this, why do people still use it when there are other great solutions out there like Skype.

Pretty much only XXX industry people use it. They love to fight against the future rather than progressing with it.

When you use ICQ for years, you need a very compelling reason to use a different platform. Multiply that by hundreds, thousands of people.

I use Skype for a few things, but I see nothing in Skype that I would need for work that I can't get with ICQ.

Cause everyone keeps using it. Without ICQ it would be a lot harder to talk to everyone.

It's not that... We use it because all of us once used it. Some of us have moved onto others - namely skype - but some people still use only ICQ, so now most of us have to run both. And if I want to contact someone I knew six years ago... Well, it's ICQ or nothing.

I disagree. Skype is better in terms of usability, mobility, and security.

Hopefully that generation of shitty sites, shitty linkdumps, shitty toplists, shitty directories, threatening trade rules, discovering wp in 2012, not knowing what an API is, crying because 12 yo kids steal all their traffic, ICQ using motherfuckers will be gone soon...

I use Skype for bullshitting with friends, ICQ for getting business done. Just the way it is.

If i would look for light and fast replacement, i would go with google talk, they just need to fix delivering msg. in some situations...

I prefer skype for calls, I like to talk more than to type, but still use ICQ to chat with people who don't use skype cause they don't have mic, or just against any talking for some reason...

There's many clients using the ICQ protocol, it works fine! Skype is a bloated piece of shit.

I have and use both skype and ICQ (QIP client). It is the nature of communication, you have to be available and as long as people use one of those so will I.

I use Trillian for ICQ, Google Chat and Yahoo. I only use Skype for video chatting with family.

I find that IM usage is a very regional thing.

In vancouver everyone was using MSN, whereas in other places people used primarily aim, or yahoo, or icq, or skype, or wahtever.

Skype good for voice communication but sucks as IM.

icq: lots of alternative clients.
skype: resource hogging memory leaking pos.

Why stop using ICQ? Nothing wrong with it. The current versions have been very stable, and use up almost no system resources.

I use Skype also. It's good for quick conference calls.

If Skype blinked and made cool sounds i would turn icq off. the little number in the sys tray doesn;t give you a feeling of "i need to answer this shit now"

Here is what I did... I just linked the incoming message for skype to my ICQ sounds file so now I get the "ut-oh' for both so I dont miss a message from skype

Good point, I don't like it's instant messaging interface. From what I can tell, it doesn't have tabs? With ICQ, I usually have a minimum of 15 tabs open.

Because I am using ICQ since 1998.

I've had my sound off on ICQ for so long. It just blinks in the taskbar when there's something incoming, you can't miss it.

Skype blows ICQ out of the water but we are stuck with ICQ because soooo many adult industry people still use it.

I prefer Skype now, but If you must use ICQ, use the network only and not the client. Use the adium client instead. It's much lighter, loads faster, and isn't bogged down with useless crap and ads.

So from what I can see here, ICQ is to Skype what the Blackberry is to the iPhone. Gets the job done, you can't kill it, but just not as sexy.
