HELP - mySQL question

My server is running FreeBSD + apache + php + mySQL. Recently, I keep getting error messages like this:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (61)

When I check the memory and cpu usage, there are a couple hundreds of MB ram free. But the cpu idle is 0.0%! And mysqld is taking 95% or more of the cpu time. The server was running well and there is no new scripts installed and no significant increase in traffic. Anyone can provide some insight about what went wrong here? I don't know if it's related, but the problem started just a couple days after the recent internet worm attack.

Any help please? Thanks!

Jin

Yes, this could be indeed the sql worm, I suggest you contact your system admin or something :-P.

are you running the latest version?

ahahhahah, this as no chance to be the SLAMMER worm...

its an MS-SQL worm...

I am running mysql version 3.23.49. Do you think the upgrade will help here? I don't believe it's from the slammer worm, either.

Jesus fucking christ.

It's not the SQL worm, that only affects MS SQL.

You are probably running out of connections.. And if mysql is taking 100% of your CPU, then whatever script you are running was written by a retarded monkey. You wouldn't believe the abuse I can put mysql through before it even starts to break a sweat.

The short of it: Talk to your sysadmin. He'll be able to up your connections, or restart the server, or whatever has gone wrong with MySQL.

Cheers,
Backov

Actually... Could the worm be causing traffic that would explain the load on a non-MS SQl server?

Heh.

You'll get this error if

a) all your mysql connections are taken up
b) mysql isnt running

I'd say you have a slow process running. Restart the DB and sit in a mysql window doing a 'show processlist' to see what's going on.

try todo a 'show processlist' to see which queries are fucking up your system.

May b one of your indexes is corrupt, try todo a

mysqlcheck -o --all-databases -p
