Man Bites Shark and I've got the pics!
Last fall I decided to take a little photo expedition to Florida's Sebastian Inlet which is located on the east coast about 40 miles south of where they launch the space shuttle. It's a place full of energy and action with lots to photograph in every direction. Here are just a few of the pics I captured in one afternoon at the inlet.
The inlet is know for it's great surf and is one of the best breaks in Florida. Surfers catch waves while fisherman try their luck on the jetty behind them. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/19.jpg During the fall the baitfish are everywhere which in turn attracts the bigger gamefish highly sought after by the fisherman. The fish are so abundant fishing is great from both the jetty and the beach. This guy nabbed a keeper Snook right in front of me in the shorebreak. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/34.jpg While the fisherman and surfers control the jetty, some guys on their personal watercraft were having their own fun jumping the waves down the beach. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/16.jpg Not to be outdone, a Dolphin took to the air and put on a show of his own. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/05.jpg All the baitfish attracts the bigger fish and all that action attracts something everyone in the water knows but doesn't want to think about and that is swimming all around underneath them are the sharks. Mostly black tip spinners. Not maneaters but big enough to ruin your day. They swim around looking for fish and grab a hand or foot by mistake letting go quickly but the damage is done. A fisherman hooked one and dragged it up the beach. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/21.jpg The shark was hooked off the jetty and pulled through the pack of surfers sending those with half a brain or half a bikini scrambling to the beach. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/17.jpg The fisherman had his hands full with the shark and finally subdued it with a bite to the shark's nose. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p...mages/bite.jpg If you only bring one hook to the beach you'll need to get your hook back so you can keep fishing. I think in this case I would just call it a day. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/31.jpg The shark was cut up as the fisherman had many uses for the different parts and inside were found a bunch of babies that were still alive. They were thrown back into the water to fill the void their mother left behind. The cycle of life continues. http://www.thewoop.com/public_html/p.../images/33.jpg |

As for the shark pups, I watched them throw them into the water. Three were able to swim away and one washed back up on the beach. |

Amazing pictures !! Aww I hope the babies will survive, although I highly doubt it. :warning As for eating shark, it really ain't unusual at all ! I live in Montreal and we can buy shark at any good fish market and restaurant ! I ate shark not too long ago actually, it doesn't really taste anything IMO and its more of a steak texture than fish. It's not soft flesh, it's kinda hard and you need to chew a lot. Don't really like it personnaly.:) |
some very cool pics

Okay, I might not know many things about sharks but one thing is sure; sharks lay eggs just like any other fish does; how come live babies were found inside this one?
|
awesome pictures!!!

Nice, the Inlet is an awsome place to chill on the beach and drink : - )

Sharks give birth in three different ways. Some sharks, like the cat shark or bull shark, lay eggs. The eggs look like squares. On each of the four corners there are strings which tie them up between water plants until the baby sharks are ready to leave. Other sharks, like the blue shark, the hammerhead shark, the gray shark, or the saw shark, give birth to their babies. Then there is another way, which is between laying eggs and giving birth. Sharks like the whale shark, the white shark, the tiger shark or the carpet shark hold their eggs inside their body. If the babies are ready, they come out of the eggs’ hard shells but inside the body of their mother. Right after that, the mother gives birth to the babies.

Even if the babies don't survive, they'll still serve a purpose as food for another...
Great story! |
