The wall along the U.S.–Mexico border has become one of the most controversial issues in the immigration debate. Although the American public is often aligned with partisan predispositions, often ignored is the role that geographic distance to the border plays in forming attitudes. This paper explores the role of proximity, partisanship, and their interaction as determinants of public attitudes toward the border wall. This paper argues that geographic distance has two effects on public attitudes: as a catalyst for direct contact and as a dynamic filter that shapes how people process information and understand a particular place or policy. Using geocoded survey data from 2017, this paper shows that as the distance to the U.S.–Mexico border increases, Republicans are more likely to support building a wall along the entire border with Mexico due to a lack of direct contact, supplanting direct information with partisan beliefs.

Democrats don't "love illegals". In fact, Democrats worked on the border fence bill under Obama. The difference between the two sides is one side says "We need to build a fence in areas where fences are needed, and then adapt other measures in other areas in order to stem the flow of illegal immigration" while the other side is "Let's build a wall and Mexico will pay for it".

If the Trump administration came forward and said "We have identified forty-six areas that are high traffic areas for illegal immigration and need $600 million to put up fences and other security measures" it would be hard for Congress to say no to it. Instead the Trump administration is all about "fuck you" and "they won't work with us" and "we want to build a wall" and "they are treating us unfairly".

Nearly three years in office and the Trump administration hasn't figured out how Washington DC works. They also haven't accomplished a damn thing.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment brought by Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL1) that would prohibit the Department of Defense from using any money to construct or modify facilities to house unaccompanied alien children (UAC). The amendment comes at a time when the Obama Administration is pushing to house migrant children at Navy airfields in Baldwin County, Ala.

The Department of Defense Appropriations Act, with Byrne’s amendment included, passed the House by a vote of 282 to 138. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

“I especially hope the passage of my amendment sends a message to the Obama Administration that they should not bring these children to Navy airfields in Baldwin County. Doing so would put the children at risk while also compromising military readiness,” Byrne said in a press release.

The Alabama Congressman spoke to the House about the potential burden that could be placed on the bases in his district in a floor speech last night.

“At a time when we face so many challenges around the globe, it just makes no sense to alter the intended use of our military facilities to serve a completely different purpose,” he said.

During my visit in June to meet the children and tour UAC housing, I warned local leaders that I fully expected the Obama Administration to push its limits with the use of Fort Sill. The Obama Administration’s lack of organization and the President’s failure to send a strong signal that he will secure the border will only increase demand of our military installations. While our military bases have been used before to temporarily aid migrants and refugees, we now have an Administration that is asking our military to do more with less resources than ever before. President Obama needs to stop putting the onus on our military to manage his crisis, and he needs to prioritize solutions that will quickly reunite these children with their families in their home country.”



Funny how when Obama did it, they were outraged and Obama wasnt doing everything possible to treat the kids badly.. Trump does same thing but gives the kids much worse conditions and Republicans are now all for it..

We are on track to apprehend well over 1,000,000 illegals crossing the border illegally. Thats just a fact... it has nothing to do with where one lives. facts are facts. Republicans want ILLEGAL immigration put in check.
