Hottest Night on Record in Australia
I know it's cold in the Northern Hemisphere but down here it's unbearably hot.
Our day time temperatures have been peaking in the mid 40s and standing outside can feel like you've walked into a blast furnace. Quote:

A few years back it was 40c at like 2 in the morning here... the white people were melting
https://www.smh.com.au/environment/w...07-h0ej5h.html "In the end, it didn't quite break the record for Sydney's hottest day, but that was hardly cool comfort for Penrith residents who sweltered through 47.3-degree temperatures on Sunday." that's 117.14 F for Americans, in an area densely populated not in the middle of the desert. And wish me luck I'm about to go for a walk in it. |

The biggest problem with this heat is that the snakes are looking for shelter and we're seeing a lot more of them around the house this year, which is a concern as we don't want our dogs to be bitten. The other problem is the kangaroos are more active at night which is a hazard on the road, between here and the next major town I hit 2 kangaroos on Tuesday night and narrowly missed a few others. We try to avoid driving at night around here, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Water is the other issue, unless you have a good set of big tanks you might be running low. We have three massive tanks in our water system so no worries there. |

It's a special breed of people who can handle Australia's outback cos its just not the heat coming down from the sun, but up from the ground, really you have to experience it to understand.
That deep red soil they have is a heat magnet and the radiating heat from that can be as hot as the sun, sandwiched between is the air you breathe, and that's the same temperature, 5 minutes in those conditions and I need to get to a bar very quickly, but there's many people who work in it daily, the aboriginals lived in it for thousands of years. Amazing how humans adapt. |

Humidity is a killer for both hot and cold.
Northerners who regularly experience 0-15 degree weather freeze their balls off at 32 degrees here in the south. One can't begin to explain what the humidity does at 100 degree weather. It chokes you out. Reminds me of the bizarre weather after hurricane Katrina.. It literally vacuumed out the atmosphere. You could light a cigarette and watch the smoke bellow straight up into the sky. Like one large room without a fan or AC. Spooky shit.

Up in northern Australia they have both extreme heat and extreme humidity, I don't like it in Darwin but I cope when I'm there.

I'd take dry heat over Florida or Kentucky (which is the worse) humidity.

Today we're expecting temperatures in the mid to high 40s.
40c = 104f 45c = 113f Tomorrow it's going to be hotter still and heat records are being exceeded all over Australia, especially in central rural areas. |

When I lived in Auckland I found the weather more like Sydney than Melbourne. But you're right it can change quickly, especially on the south island.

By 2050 our nation will be looking back fondly on 2019 when the temperature was below 50.

They're bulldozing dead camels into pits near Tanami.
In the west of NSW cattle are being shot as there is no more water or feed. It's pretty bad stuff. Quite depressing. Kangaroos around our area are skin and bones. |
