Global warming is something that happens very slowly. Oceans need to be kept at a fairly constant temperatures for fish, mammals and plants to survive. A drop or rise in temperatures threatens marine environment, which we all rely on so much.

and of course there have been some mass extinctions in the course of millions of years. the last one was also caused by greenhouse gases. only they were not released by humans but by a supervolcano in today's russia.
