Any Netflix Gurus Around?

I watch Netflix nightly on my iPad. I had my iPad in for service so was without it for five days (After eleven months the battery was dying so they sent a new iPad). I used my iPhone but was told I could buy a device, cheap, that lets me watch Netflix on my tv. Mini iPad won’t show Netflix any more. Says “network error” but it needs password. Pop up won’t go away to type in new password. Emailed for support last night.

If true, how do I determine if my tv is compatible, and what device am I seeking? My tv is new but up too high to give you the model info now. I’m almost sure it’s a SmartTV but not positive.

Google tells me of several devices that are available but not much else. The iPads are great for Prime Video, too, but I watch Netflix more often.

Thanks in advance.

If your TV has an HDMI input you can use an Amazon Firestick which can play Netflix. That is what I have and it works great.

Also, you could use a Roku for the same thing.

do you know if a firestick can connect to a wifi signal from a smartphone being used as a mobile wifi hotspot?

It can. I haven't done it with mine, but a friend has. When you set the firestick up it allows you to choose your WiFi network just like a laptop so you just have to select the network created by the phone.

I bought 2 Apple TV devices a long time ago to stream Netflix but then my cable company added Netflix as an app so now no external device needed. I've only used Apple TV devices personally but other options mentioned here.

What he said.

We have the Firestick on three different TVs - Family room, office, and Master bedroom. We use it mostly for Hulu though, but Netflix works the same.

Thanks, y’all. HDMI I’m not sure of but the tv is just fifteen months old. I’ll ask tomorrow as you can’t look in the back. All 42” TVs are mounted on a wall. Six identical models all up high. I’m sure corporate knows unless there are outlets on the bottom, then I’d have a CNA check.

Roku I’ve heard of but it might be out of my price range.

I just don’t want to wear out another iPad. I’ll need a seven or eight foot earphone cord. Mine are just 18” or so. Unless someone here wants to buy me a Bose headphones bundle for Hanukkah 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

Can Amazon Prime Video be watched on tv? It’s free with my Prime membership.

If the TV is that new and is a smart TV it likely has the app built into it. There should be some kind of a menu button on the remote that will show you the apps it has. All you would need to do is log in using the Netflix app. You might have to download the app if the TV doesn't already have it loaded.

As for Prime, a fire stick will play it. If the TV is a smart TV it should also have a Prime app.

Most DVD players come preloaded with the "smart" setup now. You can buy then at Walmart all day long for $50 or so

My remote is the standard grey remote that the big cable companies provide. The actual tv remote is buried in a box and I’ll look for it this week. My current remote has no Netflix button. I asked about HDMI today but the girl was not an electronic whiz.

Me: does the tv have an HDMI outlet?
Her: outlet like opening?
Me: yeah, to put it in (I meant the plug or cord)
Her: oh like DVD. I don’t think you can play tapes and shit on these
Me: oh. Can I plug in a compatible d3vice like a Firestick?
Her: yah you got one empty plug thing here on the wall
Me: on the wall?
Her: yah down here where the tv plugs in
Me: thanks

So I’ll ask the house manager on Monday. If available, I’ll look at Amazon Firestick prices

Thanks again. And fake nicks are okay if they have the knowledge.

is it a widescreen tv purchased in the last 15 years?
assuming yes, it’s got at least one hdmi input.

get the tv remote, and look for dedicated button netflix or a generic apps button, or in the menu.

if it’s not a smart tv there are hundreds of options for getting netflix.
apple tv being my favorite. but if a roku is out of your price range and apple tv will definitely be as well. fire stick is probably a better option for you.

if for some god forsaken reason your tv only has one hdmi input and it’s being used for your cable box, get an hdmi switch.

and of course the tv if smart, or the device yo get will require a network connection, so make sure you’re hard-wired or know the wifi password.

as for your headphone requirement.. you can buy extensions of any length on amazon on the cheap. but good luck finding a headphone jack on most tvs... and the bluetooth options are generally laggy garbage.

you can buy a headphone jack to rca jumper to use the analog audio out most tvs have. but then you have no control over volume since that output is meant to be amplified.. unless you buy a headphone amp... which you can get on az also for like 40 bucks.

Roku has a streaming package which is a remote and a usb-looking device. Normally $40, it’s half the price on Black Friday. The odds of me shopping on that day are 10000000000-to-1. It’s an in-store only sale. I’m hoping an online sale will be available.

If I go with Roku, do I need the tv remote I can’t find plus the hdmi outlet?

Chromecast device on sale, too, but the same issues arise as in remote.

I can buy the tv remote easily. I just need $200. Yeah, right. I can buy a new 40” tv with remote for $139 on Black Friday or was it $99?

I can’t get another remote so need a solution. My electronics expert was off today but she’s the one who said the Netflix app was $100 ... so I trust y’all more. HDMI seems doable but I’ll know tomorrow. Remote is not and that’s why Roku and chromecast caught my attention

And, yes, I know Google can help. After I get through the spam and thesis’ written about this, the question isn’t answered clearly. I’m not looking to add my own hdmi outlet, retire a remote or split wires to develop a hack into the tv.

If you don't have the remote to the TV you can probably buy a universal remote. They aren't very much money. The Roku, Firestick, or Chromecast will all come with remotes and you need them to use them, although it is possible some universal remotes might be useable as well for those.

Yes when using a cell as a hot spot its the same as connecting to a wireless router. Only issue would be if your cell companies blocks tethering or Netflix.

Tip.. go into Netflix settings on their website and set the quality to low. When watching on a big TV the low quality is not bad looking and it doesn't use much data. It's a few 100mbs a movie vs gigs when you watch in HD.

I have 30 gigs of data via Verizon my cell plan and a jetpack each has 15 gigs. With setting on low I watch a lot of Netflix just on the jet pack and even if I burn the full 15gigs I can still usually stream at low quality on the limited bandwidth.

I need a universal remote for the tv? I use one but it has no Netflix button. I was hoping Chromecast or Roku remote would be okay and allow me to view Netflix

It isn’t a Smart tv but it’s too dark to see the brand. I’ll wake up later and find out the model. Thanks again to all

I don't know about Chromecast as I have never used it but Roku will let you watch Netflix.

You will need to plug the Roku box into the HDMI port on the TV so you will need to use the TV's remote to switch the input to HDMI when you want to watch Netflix.

Today I spoke to the female who first mentioned this.

Her: I have an extra Fire Stick. You just have to call Amazon and transfer it to your account.

Me: I don’t need a special remote to use it? Do have an hdmi port?

Her: No special remote needed. You have two hdmi ports and the cable box uses one.

She’ll bring it Saturday if she works and if not, then on Monday I’m happy but confused about the remote. If my remote has no Netflix button, can I use the Fire Stick?

How much should I offer her? She bought a new Dunkin cup from me. I paid ¢12.99 plus $7 shipping and asked for $10. Unused cup.

Apparently she thinks hdmi outlet means electrical outlet. 😁

I need to know where it’s located, meaning back or bottom or top of the tv. I don’t want someone short to set it up if it’s on top. Then I’ll hear bitching about how a ladder is needed and blah blah blah.

I’m not a genius on electrical components but a wall plug from an hdmi or telephone outlet is basic common sense! That’s why I laughed so much when she said that.

HDMI stuff is not new to me but amnesia gets in my way. I’d rather ask here than an electrical forum. There I’ll get five paragraphs on the difference between the outlets or a thesis on devices. Here I’ll get answers that are simple and uncomplicated. Google is great but.....thanks 👍

Yeah what in the actual fuck? Someone actually asked a legit question about something other than politics or fourteen pages on whether someone is an asshole.

A post that might help others besides me and Trump was not mentioned.

Wow. People showing they know more than politicians and how awesome those tits are. After all, adult webmasters don’t see cool tits very often. They can only repeat rhetoric about politics and how fucked up xxxxx is.

Adult webmasters only know tits, pussies and getting laid. Nothing else matters.

Yeah, that’s it. Now go post another informational message about Trump or the industry and how you’re a big baller that does better than everyone else here

I've done Roku Netflix off a mobile hotspot but I am speed throttled after 10GB/month and that doesn't last long.

Hm, I’m not limited but I don’t plan to spend more time online than I do now. This is for my eyesight as the iPad screen isn’t too big at nine inches (!) and I’m already partially blind. I’ll be in a different position to watch TV and that’s less painful.

Roku was an option but reviews online of Roku Netflix aren’t that good. Nothing is perfect but less problems are better. My friend obviously has it set up at home with Fire Stick so she can troubleshoot it for me. I have to think ahead about things like that so I’m prepared. I’ve already put a Post-It with info on my cabinet door so if a problem occurs, I can find out the connection, login, password, set up, etc.

Still don’t know if she’s working tomorrow but if not, Monday I’ll be set up or close to it. Luckily everything is working so if she’s out for a week with sick kids, I have working Netflix. The greatest leap in technology of the 2000’s is Netflix on tv or computer and NOT waiting for the DVDs to arrive in the mailbox.

Solved. She bought a Roku with remote. Set it up and tomorrow I will play around with the remote and learn. I only have one HDMI port right now but it’s a switch of plugs for now. She’s buying me a two-port plugin.

Didn’t realize I could also view Amazon Prime TV with this.

Thanks to all for the help.
