Sure, a lot/most of rural Texas is conservative, but the population centers/huge cities are very democrat.

I think it's much much worse today. Then, it was "George Bush fucked it up, but here's a better way to do it!" and we could discuss and debate that. It was also very simple, single fuckups that tanked their popularity - a war or "read my lips, no new taxes etc".
