Republican lawmaker: Rocks tumbling into ocean causing sea level rise

Are republicans truly this stupid?

The Earth is not warming. The White Cliffs of Dover are tumbling into the sea and causing sea levels to rise. Global warming is helping grow the Antarctic ice sheet.

Those are some of the skeptical assertions echoed by Republicans on the U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee yesterday. The lawmakers at times embraced research that questions mainstream climate science during a hearing on how technology can be used to address global warming.

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) questioned the factors that contribute to sea-level rise, pointing out that land subsidence plays a role, as well as human activity.

Brooks then said that erosion plays a significant role in sea-level rise, which is not an idea embraced by mainstream climate researchers. He said the California coastline and the White Cliffs of Dover tumble into the sea every year, and that contributes to sea-level rise. He also said that silt washing into the ocean from the world's major rivers, including the Mississippi, the Amazon and the Nile, is contributing to sea-level rise.

"Every time you have that soil or rock or whatever it is that is deposited into the seas, that forces the sea levels to rise, because now you have less space in those oceans, because the bottom is moving up," Brooks said.

ugh, Dana Rohrabacher is my local congressman and I've never found why he's so very anti global warming. He blames it on the liberals but that's not a valid reason.

The U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee is utterly ridiculous.

I remember years ago there was something this committee was going to vote on so we all watched their session on C-span - a bunch of from GFY did. The person in charge of this group in 2004 used the term "email thingy". In 2004 he had no idea what email was, what it did, or how it was used. How can someone in charge of "science and technology" be so far behind in the times?

This isn't a position someone should take because they have free time or need to pretend like they are doing their job in Washington DC.... We need smart people doing this.

Sounds about as absurd as icebergs breaking off into the ocean and causing the sea levels to rise.. I wonder who pushed that theory?

Liberals are the reason everything in the world is wrong according to Republicans. Next time you leave Cali tune into some of the radio stations in rural America..

These people can't put two sentences together that they aren't blaming liberals for something..

This whole thing sounds like Robbie Science to me. This is the exact type of thing he'd fall for and spend hours explaining how he was right..

As the land erodes it reforms elsewhere - It's a continuous cycle...

There was a similar cycle in the Antarctic with glaciers forming and collapsing into the sea - That cycle has been broken.....

well, technically he is right. Rocks falling into the oceans would change the level of the water. We'd need a calculator with a lot of decimal places to determine the increase.

Yes, I know.. however its all about amounts of volume... if you fill a glass of water to the top edge and drop a rock, piece of ice or a egg in it, each will cause the water to overflow. However the amount of rocks falling into the ocean amount to about a gain of sand being dropped into that glass.. vs with ice sheets melting and sliding into the ocean its more like dropping a ice cube into that glass..

Its all about the volume. Its pretty often we hear ice sheet the size of Maine breaks off into the ocean (or what ever state they choose to describe).. Meanwhile have you ever heard of a landmass of rocks the size of Maine falling into the ocean?

They are all wrong!

The sea level is rising because we don't deep sea fish enough.
Each new fish born takes up space and displaces an amount of water equal to it's size.
Therefore we really need to stop whales from fucking.

There should be a basic intelligence test for all members of congress, as well as a psychological evaluation. It's a very important job, yet we'll allow any idiot to sign up for it.

Wouldn't it be great that in order to be a decision or policy maker on a particular subject such as Climate Change, that you should at least have a basic understand of oh, I don't know, Science? I'm so sick of these fucking assholes destroying the planet because they are so goddam fucking stupid.

don´t worry - trump stopped to finance the climate science projects last week.
that will not stop the climate change and the consequences but at least stop that you hear about it.

no we don't, because rocks the size of maine do not fall into the ocean over night... That would take YEARS, DECADES, CENTURIES to happen when the ice is happening in front of us.

the environment is not a partisan issue. drop it, you don't know what the fuck you are talking about and your religious leader congressman, who is just telling you what you want to hear, doesn't know anything either. He's just manipulating people like you...

Rocks? LOL! What an idiot.

I do have one question though for all of you GFY scientists.

We are told that the Icebergs melting will cause the oceans to rise. Correct?
That somehow...ice in the ocean turning back into water causes higher water levels.

And yet...if I take a glass of ice and water and fill it to the very rim and then let the ice melt: The glass does not overflow.
Turns out the ice has the same mass after it melts as it did when it was ice.

So how does ice melting cause the ocean to rise? What am I missing here?

I'm no expert but Greenlands ice sheet is not an iceberg floating in the ocean but sits on land. If it were to entirely melt it is estimated to raise oceans worldwide by 24ft.

Could you be thinking of glacier melt and such places where icebergs originate prior to calving into the ocean? Because you're right, once a berg is in the ocean, its mass has already impacted the water level.

Maybe the terminology has thrown me off or something in regards to that.

Obviously if ice is on dry land and melts then yeah....water will rise.

I guess I see a lot of video showing giant icebergs when people talk about "global warming".
Probably when they say "icebergs are melting" that led me to wondering about that.

I knew you wouldnt fail disappoint us with some Robbie science.. Apparently, all the ice in the Artic is floating icebergs..

what you definitely miss is that icebergs having an ice mass also OVER the water.

btw. the most of this additional water does not come from icebergs - it comes from glaciers what have never been in contact with the sea.

if you would just inform yourself before you start such funny theories you would not make such a public fool out of you.

even if they would be floating it will make a big damage to the whole world.

ice is sweet water and it would change the salt level in the sea what means that the most sea life would be effected.

even when we do not see it or someone (like me) don´t eat fish. killing the sea life means killing the planet.

Yes but most of the ice is on land.

Stop having thoughts. You suck at it.

Seriously though. You're a goddamn moron. You should dunk yourself in a tub to see if the level rises above your breathing orifices...then stay there until the world is a better place.
