Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Hits No. 1 Spot In First Week

I couldn’t find the other thread. I thought he looked familiar. Duh. I just saw the entire video online and now it makes sense. The bad dancing, mediocre rapping and name. I saw Donald in a series on tv that I loved but can’t remember the name.

Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Hits No. 1 Spot In First Week

Just a week after its release, it's already his biggest hit ever.

Donald Glover is setting himself up to be the star of the summer.

“This Is America,” the song Glover released under his Childish Gambino moniker, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 chart, making it the most-streamed and top-selling song of the week.

The multitalented star sneak-released the song and video on May 6. It immediately struck a chord with music fans, thanks to the video’s haunting images of black oppression and gun violence.

“This Is America” is already the biggest hit of Glover’s music career, beating out his 2017 hit “Redbone,” which peaked at No. 12.

“This Is America” won’t be Glover’s only No. 1 hit this month.

His latest film, “Solo,” in which he plays a young Lando Calrissian, opens in theaters May 25 and is expected to be the No. 1 film that week.

Not my taste, but liked it better high. Good for him

I didn't know he plays a young Lando Calrissian in the new star Wars movie that's cool.

I watched it four times tonight. Each time I found something new.

Go to YouTube and search for interpretations of the video. Fascinating! The two white guys interpreting it differently. Donald Glover saying “no” when asked to explain it! I didn’t understand the meaning behind most depictions as I’m white. Black people will see the symbolism quickly.

It’s really a brilliant video and song.

See, I thought he was an actor. I had no idea he was a rapper.

To me it is nothing more than a good example of what TV wants you to think reality is.

You're missing alot, Cap'. Don't let anyone else tell you if its good or bad or not. Just watch it for yourself and make up your own mind.

It's hard to hear the words, sure, but it's the video itself that is really interesting and is what has everyone talking.

That's not what the video is about. At least, that's not my take-away...

Of course they did. The director packed a shit-ton of symbolism into the 3 minute video. You don't have to agree with it, but it is really interesting to watch.

you should not tell other people what they should like or make definitive conclusions on what you think art is to other people. you just stated not to let anyone tell me what's right or wrong re: art then you tell me my view on art is wrong. that's nonsensical, judgemental, and elitist.

anyone saying this video is only popular for the senseless violence must have missed the whole chicago drill movement that is no longer popular because of the senseless violence.

the video is popular because of the fact that you guys only see the senseless violence, while others see that you were played for the fool you are lol

Danny Glover, the artist behind the video, completely disagrees with you.

and calling other people names because they don't see art like you demand them to reveals your lack of understanding on top of being wrong.

He absolutely does not disagree with me LOL

That's your gaygenda mindframe creating that narrative for you. Bro only said he doesnt want to explain it and wants to leave it open for interpretation.

None of the gays I know like it... because it doesn't pander to the media gayout. All humans in his videos were treated equal... no gay specials. And the gays hate it. Cant control it like they did to blm, etc.

calling people names because they see art different from you does not bolster your view.

It reveals you're insecure with your own views.

And I didn't call you names other than what yall are... gay... or is that no longer politically correct? Is there more confusing pronouns and stuff I have to learn now in order to have the privilege to address you (guys)?

the oddest part of the blacks attacking me for sharing my benign view on this art is that clearly the video is directed at blacks, not whites. Any messaging in the art is for them, not me. The video and lyrics are their's, not mine and I can prove that using the silly symbolism in the video and the lyrics.

This forum is a fascinating psychological study. They should stop charging for ads and start charging the APA for access.

I figure 5-10% on either "side" are hopelessly lost. Unabashed racists/xenophobes on one side and the illogical, emotionally delusional on the other.

We can still get somewhere will the rest of us.

The woman in the video above let's us hear from the Woman's viewpoint. There are more women than there are blacks (especially when you count black women). Will it get the same press? Not quite the divisive issue that race is. Less division = less win for the media.

Her's is a well done video too. While a knock-off, it's not like Glover isn't knocking off Spike Lee et al with the messaging.

But her's will never go massively viral because it lacks the violence of Glover's. And I'm glad she chose to forgo the violence.

You on the other hand said it's "a video uses violence in everything to point a finger at violence in everything. " right here which is actually missing the point of the video, in my opinion. And, you told CaptainHowdy that he's "not missing anything" here. Sooo.....why not encourage him to watch it instead of discourage him?

I'm not elitist, and you calling me that is itself nonsensical and judgemental is it not? You are misreading and misinterpreting my comments and since you don't know me personally, have an incomplete dataset on which to base your statements about me on.

But so what. This is art we're talking about, so just chill. I like it, you don't, end of story, peace on earth.

Sure, I replied to captain howdy and told him don't bother. I was simply being agreeable with him, it wasn't like I was thinking he was reconsidering his stance to not watch it and I felt the need to reinforce it. And it's not my job to talk people into art. My job is to communicate my response or reaction to it without disrespecting others' responses and reactions to it.

proof the video is directed at blacks

1. the violence in the video is committed by blacks and onto other blacks, not whites. no whites at all. Even when the violence is mimicking real events like the shooting the choir in the video copies the Charleston murders, it's committed by a black, the protagonist throughout the video in fact. The stance he makes when murdering the first guy is reminiscent of Jim Crow, you know what a Jim Crow Black is.

2. the lyrics in conjunction with their place in the video are clearly directed at blacks

We just wanna party
Party just for you
We just want the money
Money just for you
I know you wanna party
Party just for me
Girl, you got me dancin' (yeah, girl, you got me dancin')
Dance and shake the frame
We just wanna party (yeah)
Party just for you (yeah)
We just want the money (yeah)
Money just for you (you)
I know you wanna party (yeah)
Party just for me (yeah)
Girl, you got me dancin' (yeah, girl, you got me dancin')
Dance and shake the frame (you)

If we are going to dissect the video for a message, it's important to include the lyrics.

conclusion, the message of video "this is America" is not directed at me. It's directed at blacks. Nothing wrong with that at all, there's plenty of black entertainment not directed at me, as there should be.

"Don't tell anyone else what to like...."

OK so I guess all movie and music reviewers are out of work now huh?

Song: Pure crap.
Video: Train wreck rubber necking garbage.
Glover: Stick to acting.

you really can't be serious to think that a music reviewer can sway what music someone likes. I dislike opera and no review(er) has ever changed that.

Am I really going to start disliking a song after reading a bad review of it? Or am I going to conclude I simply have different tastes from the critic?

Dude: You said "a video uses violence in everything to point a finger at violence in everything" as if it were a matter of fact, and not of opinion, and suggested it was stupid by adding "did they not think it through?" (post)

When Cap' said he refused to watch the video, you added "you're not missing anything", and, "the only reason it went viral is due to the shockingly gratuitous violence in it." again as fact, and not as opinion.

Nowhere did you say "I think", or "My opinion is", etc. It seems like, Cap, and the rest of us I assume, are supposed to take what you say as fact, case closed.

Why didn't you encourage him to watch the video anyway, and share his opinions here?

When the first person is shot, he is posing like the cover art of "Jump Jim Crow". The Jim Crow laws were put in place by white people.

In the video, he guns down people in a choir, which is reminiscent of the The Charleston murders that were committed by a white guy.

If we are going to dissect the video for a message, it's important to include the lyrics.
I have a few opinions on this.

1. What is only "Black" about the snippet of lyrics you shared above? (Can't white people dance?)

2. If you think it is aimed only at black people, are you saying that there is nothing that white people can learn about or discuss with this?

3. Maybe the lyrics are meant to be different from the video. What's wrong with words completely contrasting the video?

4. Why didn't you post all of the lyrics? If you are going to talk about the lyrics to a song, isn't it important to include all of the lyrics instead of just your choice of a piece of a song?

Here is the whole song.

Why should art be directed at just one piece of the population? Why do you feel excluded? You seem to say that it's ok for you to ignore or dismiss art because it is made by people of a different color. You could if you want to I guess but you I think you would be missing out and doing yourself a great disservice.

When you have to scientifically dissect a video to explain the artists intention it's a failed endeavor on the artists part. Art speaks for itself by speaking to the soul of the viewer , no interpretation needed

Why should art be directed at just one piece of the population? Why do you feel excluded? You seem to say that it's ok for you to ignore or dismiss art because it is made by people of a different color. You could if you want to I guess but you I think you would be missing out and doing yourself a great disservice.

Peace & Art & Love.

it's odd you're so insecure in your opinions that you go to this length to criticize mine simply because I'm confident in them.

and heads up: if i'm sharing my response to the video then I'm not ignoring it or dismissing it. that's obvious.

btw, mark, you'll never gotcha me with your feigned art critic schtick. I have to socialize with art snobs that make you look like a kid at the local library's display case.

You're sharing your opinion of a music video, and I'm sharing mine. And in this thread you've accused me of telling other people what to do (I haven't), insulted other people for their opinions, called Dead Eye a Homophobe, etc. In this post you gave Dead Eye shit for calling other people names, and in this post you said "calling people names because they see art different from you does not bolster your view.It reveals you're insecure with your own views."

You really seem... insecure..! Are you feeling ok?

No one is trying to change your mind about what you like or don't like. Just post your opinions and try to do it without insulting others with different opinions.

Sounds a little elitist of you right there, Dynamo-buddy!
