holy shit, only got the ending on now from the return of the king, literally every line and expression of every character is cringeworthy and corny. This is insane.

Dead Alive (1992)

Bad Taste (1987)

to be honest, i think this would classify as a troll thread, since these type of movies are completely the opposite of what i find even remotely interesting or entertaining.

and i dont think i'd be interested in reading books about elves, trolls and hobbits... now if there was a book about gfy trolls, that would be another story

Everyone has their "thing". For me, I love 1980s music and movies (as tacky as that can be) and I love anything related to WWII.

Some people like this entire "dungeons and dragons" thing.

It became popular after the new generation sprung, all kids post the Star Wars era.

Young kids ate it up because the "older kids" were into Star Wars and every younger generation wants their "own movie."

Same for music. Young kids just want the latest new tunes, even if they sucks ass.

Also, that generation after Star Wars got sucked up into D & D and I think they relate to Lord of the Rings because of all the flying cartoon dragons.

The Lord of the Rings series of books has sold over 150 million copies worldwide. The Hobbit has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

The movies had a built in audience not to mention they are pretty damn impressive pieces of work.

It's because before TV and movies we had books - Tolkien was one of the most popular authors and when they made the films all the old people had to see it...

You like Harry Potter and we like Tolkien.....

90% of the people who loved the movie never read the book first (if at all).

I love the LOTR movies. If I happen to be channel surfing and one of them is on I end up watching it even though I have seen them dozens of times already.

Personally I find them refreshing as I am totally burned out on superhero / comic book movies.

Although I do still like the darker comic book or graphic novel stuff like 300 or Sin City, I just can't handle Marvel crap anymore. The Thor series was the nail in the coffin for me, and the needless Spiderman reboot was just pouring salt in the wound. Tried watching the Captain America sequel and while I enjoyed the first half, by the last 30 minutes I just walked away and started doing housework, since I can't handle the pointless CGI explosion climaxes they always end these movies with. Just turns into a bunch of noise. Probably kind of odd considering how much I spent on my sound system for my home theater.

Please. Today's kids DON'T READ.

I'll bet you a million dollars easily that 99 out of 100 kids who like LOTR have not read the books.

It takes brains to read a book, and if those kids had brains, they wouldn't like the movie to begin with.

LOTR is for mindless people that are entertained with cartoon images. The same crowd that loves Avatar most likely loved LOTR.

Many kids read. It wasn't just adults that made Harry Potter the success it has been.

On Amazon the Fellowship of the Ring is still in the top 10 for sci-fantasy book sales. Someone is reading it.

Also, the books have been around forever and had a huge fanbase before the movie was ever out. Many of the people that bought a ticket were in their 30's and older who had read the books as a kid.

I agree many of the teens that went to see the movie hadn't read the book, but according to IMDB only about 18% of the audience for these movies was under the age of 18.

I read The Hobbit as a kid and loved it. About 6 months ago I read Fellowship of the Ring and it is dry...and long. A lot of people walking around not doing much. I struggled to get through it so I don't know that I will be reading the others.

don't forget LOTR (books) was fundament of modern fantasy, it's undeniable classic and will always be.

before we had heroic fantasy created by REH that can be read even now and it's still good (yeah talking about Conan books).

but no one attempted to creat so much developed world with history, myths and language before Tolkien (fantasy world).

after Tolkien comes fantasy boom, every author good or bad must have their own map of his world drawn in his books, everyone tried to be another Tolkien but no one can be since he was simply first who created such complex books.

what i'm trying to say it's no matter what some troll gonna say about Tolkien - you can't change history

personally i love hobbit, read it 6 times when i was young, LOTR read 2 times, also good but i was already influenced/corrupted by Black Company series so LOTR was kind of softcore for me ;)

if you wan't some more hardcore fantasy stories (and i mean hardcore) i recommend:

Kane series by Karl Edward Wagner
Black company series by Glen Cook
Malazan book of the fallen by Steven Erikson

and from newest ones, maybe not as hardcore like previous ones but also incredibly well written, well thought and planned, series that shows how war influence evolution:

Shadows of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Only the bible has sold more copies.

If you think the theatrical releases are long, the extended cut editions are way too much for you. Add in the many many bonus hours of DVD extras and only the strongest survive.

The movies were hit or miss with me.

I adore the books, as well as the Hobbit. Not a big fan of fantasy, overall. Can't deny the impact and importance of the series, though.

Edgar Rice Burroughs rolls, spins and backflips in his grave.

Barsoom was the bomb. Disney may have dropped the ball with the film but John Carter was a goddamn badass.

Saw the first one and thought it was okay...I walked out of the 2nd one in the theater, I can only watch an axe hit a shield so many times...I rented the 3rd one and fast forwarded to the ending.

Yes, kids are buying the books, but they are collecting them. Not to read, but to own.

The generations have changed drastically since kids now walk around with TV sets in their hands. Point and click society. Instant entertainment and gratification. Kids don't even do research to learn things, they use computers to simply 'find the answer' and translate the answer to their homework. Teachers allow kids to use computers and Google and it's all part of the norm now. It's no wonder kids in US are far below average compared to kids in other countries.

Kids reading books outside of what school demands of them? I think not.

Never watched a single min of any of the movies. And haven't read any of the books.

I've survived though...

Read the books; saw the original Hobbit movie and was convinced I had no need to see LOTR. I think I'll survive.

watch the first 5 mins and the last 5 mins of that movie and forget about everything in the middle and tell me how awesome it is then..
