Do you think Hustler is good company to purchase your content ?

I apologies for long post but I still cant believe what happen and I need to share this with someone from our field of business !

7 or 8 months ago we sent 2 sets of pictures, one we shoot with young couple on Caribbean and another in Toronto to Scott Hunter, editor of Hustler?s Home Town Girls magazine.

We tracked shipment on Internet and according courier it was delivered.
Few days after we e-mailed Scott Hunter and asked if he had chance to review photos.
His answer was: ? We received them but didn?t have time to review them? will take few days more.
2 weeks later we sent e-mail again, This time answer was: ?We did not get those sets?
???? What ? We tracked package, we got e-mail that they got them..
My husband called and spoke with Mr. Hunter. He said: ?We did not receive pictures?, e-mail with confirmation that he sent us already was just to buy some time because they were busy. At the time he wrote that he didn?t know if they had photos or no.

Well?.Hustler is reputable publishing company and we bought that bull shit from him.

Hours of phone calls with Canadian courier, that by the way has very stupid policy of leaving packages at ?safe? place if nobody is at destination address to sign for package.

So they didn?t have signature, and Mr. Hunters story was more believable. I almost sue courier, but they had policy??etc etc. They promised to return shipping charges and send 100$ check. Got nothing, but that doesn?t matter now.

We kissed good bye our slides, profit, money paid to models and our time spent to shoot.

3 weeks ago we got e-mail from Angelina, ?new Scott Hunter assistant?
She was telling me that Mr. Hunter offering to purchase one of my sets and bla bla bla?

They had my pictures for 7 months and they told me they didn?t receive them. Now our photos suddenly got on surface.

Happy ending J

Unfortunately not..

We didn?t mention anything to Angelina about 7 months waiting period.
We just sent letter telling that amount offered for photos is not even 50% what we are getting from other publications and that can?t cover even models fee, and that we would like pictures back.

- No replay to that e-mail
- We sent new one? ?Hello Angelina. Please let me know if my sets are sent back to me.?
- Got answer - ?Hi,the sets are being sent via FedEx today.?
- Few days nothing from fedex
- We sent e-mail ? ?Hello Angela, I didn't receive any FedEx yet, Please send me tracking number.?
- No replay
- We sent again. ?Please send me tracking number?
- No replay
- We sent ?Hello Angelina , this is third time that I am asking you politely to send me FedEx Tracking Number.?
- They reply ?Please calm down I was out and someone else was supposed to send out the package. The tracking number is ### #### #### Sorry about the delay.?
- We Sent ?This tracking number is wrong, Fedex cant track it. Please check again !?
- They Reply ?This is a tracking number fro something that is not yet in the system. It was supposed to have been picked up yesterday but Fed Ex didn't come. Probably won't go out until Monday.?
- Monday can?t track it.
- Tuesday can?t track it.
- We sent ?Hello Angelina. It is Tuesday and that tracking number is still not in FedEx system. Are you going to send that any time soon ? If needed send on my cost !
- Wednesday I finally tracked package and Thursday we had them back.

It is nice to have HUSTLER in your portfolio or as purchaser, but no thank you, at least not with Scott Hunter and his assistants.

Talk to Charly, since he is fond of saying "I know the guy who signs the checks at Hustler."

You sent the originals which in my opinion was a dumb move. Secondly, you got them back, so it seems your work was not all lost. Sure, Hustler didn't make a good bid for them, but you got your work back and hopefully learnt a lesson to never send the originals. You should thanks Hustler if anything...

You guys obviously never worked with magazines. Any magazine that publish high quality photos over whole page will accept only and only slides (positives) because of much higher resolution than photographs. When you shooting slides there is no copy. Original and that is it. We did shoot digital at the same time, but that is good for internet use only.
We made 2 mistakes here. Sending slides by Purolator that didn't require signature from receiver and dealing with Scott Hunter.

Holy shit. Hustler gets their photos, lies to them and dicks them around for seven months and he owes them thanks. Will you pay me to kick you in the nuts, too?

That's indeed a bad first experience. I'm only familiar with the hustler sponsor program and it's more than great, but i guess everybody knows that.

I am sure Hustler is great company and we do not put blame to Hustler generally. But I will cote here Mister X that replayed to my post in other message board:

"Just goes to show you. A company is only as good as the least competent person that works there"

Techniques of slide coping are known to me. Unfortunately not available in my city, but that is beside a point as well as other things that we should or shouldn't do. We learn our lesson.
I am not asking any of you to support me or cry over my bad luck. I got my slides back and they are already sold to someone else !
I simply post this as warning to content providers. This is what you can expect dealing with this guy.

Magazines require chromes or high quality digital for print purposes.. it is difficult to have copies of slides made.. that is part of the gamble of dealing with magazines.. we sell to major mens magazines.. and have never had any problems... we've also sold sets to LFP...

I too received this e-mail from Scott Hunter/Angelina.. and also a phone call.. but they were in search of girl next door style content and not glamour... but honestly .. I'm not sure if they are even affiliated with Hustler.. It could be they were trying to put something together and sell to Hustler??? gotta be careful.. and send your slides to the home offices.. not to some foreign address...

Here's a letter from De'Shara I received the first time I talked to De'Shara about submitting girls Hustler in July of 2001. She told me to read this, have the girls read it, and follow the procedure in it:

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in Larry Flynt Publications. To be considered for any of our publications and or video, you must be at least eighteen years of age.

You will need to send the following photos along with a copy of your drivers license and a second form of Government issued identification (such as: a social security card, birth certificate, passport, travel visa, etc.). Please be aware that all forms of identification must be current and valid. Also include with your package a current address and telephone number along with your statistics.

Please send a couple of head shots, preferably one with and one without a smile. Along with those photos, I will also need a profile shot, one from each side of the face.

Include full-length body shots (completely nude) from the front, side, and back views along with a few poses. Male candidates must be erect for the frontal and side shots.

Please insure that all photos are clear and fill the entire frame.

Thank you for your time and if you are in need of any further information please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

De?Shara Wallace

Slide duplication is also too expensive to be a good option to the photographer that submits dozens of sets. There is also the issue that slide duplication does not create as good a quality a slide as the original.

If a set is accepted a magazine company could buy the set outright, although what is more common is that the worldwide print rights are sold for a time period (usually a year) where the images cannot be resold. This is another reason why photographers do not create many duplicates of their work because if they make a sale, they are limited with what they can do with the set. Having duplicates of a set sold outright would be worthless.

Nearly all magazine sets are shot to slide, digital has been tested repeatedly and found to not give as good results as slides. I am sure that this will change but currently our company will only use digital images when the photo we be for a quarter page or less. Anything larger and the images just dont match up to the quality of slides.

LUNA is a good guy, we have dealt with him in the past and will do so in the future. Having his money tied up for so many months is without a doubt very frustrating. That said, the organization and day to day management of incoming submissions for a magazine company that has as many titles as Flynt is more complex than it would appear. Having seen the process firsthand, I do have a measure of sympathy for Hustler as keeping it organized when you have hundreds of new sets in bins waiting for decision, with more arriving via courier every day is no small task.

i have the submission guidelines for a few different mens magazine publishers ......... i don't see what the fuss is about, they don't pay all that great, and just the time/effort spent on making a sale since it's a spec market seems a bit unproductive -
i sent the one guy a note saying if he wants something, let me know and Wanton will shoot it.
