They were probably just beaten down and resigned to their fate. A few that tried to pull themselves from the flames were kicked back into them. The all seemed to be very lethargic. They may have also been starved and sleep deprived.

I dont think they had much of a choice to do anything else, they were most probably beaten senseless before they were thrown on the fire. I have seen an African girl and her friends beat a guy over the head with a rock in the middle of Krugersdorp in SA. I have no idea what caused it but nobody even tried to help including me.
