VEGAS: Good or bad? I'm getting mixed reviews

I'm hearing it was a fucking joke, and some people here are saying how good it was.

Well?

What's your take on it?

My take is this:

1. If you weren't there, then the show definitely wasn't good for you

2. Many of the bigger guys were at AEE. The internet and DVD businesses have pretty much merged at this point. Years ago the DVD people thought that the internet was a "fad" and the IA2000 show was born for the internet porn people. Those days are over and Internext is now all about business amongst program owners. Having said that, I personally didn't have a lot of business to do here this time. That's not a putdown of the show, but rather the result of me kicking ass over the last year getting deals done.

As far as quantity of people attending, it was down attendance wise. And the fact that there was only 2 days of "floor" that only lasted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. wasn't a good thing at $300 a badge either.

I didn't bother attending the seminars, and heard there was a lot of talk about piracy and torrent and illegit tube sites hurting people.

Most of the people from the programs that were there wanted to talk to me about the encrypted streaming solution I use on claudia-marie.com as they are really getting hit hard by the stealing of content.

Overall, I would say that I'm glad I went. But the guys at AVN really need to step up their game if they want to continue. Last years XBiz, Cybernet, Phoenix and Atlanta Forum shows were much better. Of course the economy hadn't collapsed yet in all fairness.

A number of people I talked to said that half the people were walking around bitching about how bad sales were, and the other half were looking for a job.

Probably the best I've been to, and most productive. However, I don't think I used my pass one single time. I didn't attend the show floor, seminars, or any event that required the pass. So the $250 was completely wasted, but everything else was just amazing.

I had heard something close to that also. I also always feel like people who go to shows feel propelled to say they did a ton of business and it was the greatest show ever.

At most of the shows, the other people are not going to bring me business. That's to say, our company, niche, and how we run things is an enigma.

So there is little a traffic guy can offer me for example. I have more niche, and fetish traffic rolling through my network of sites that is qualified, filtered, traffic then they have in their networks.

I am not a content provider beyond licensing, and maybe building a site or two in my free time, and I do not push affiliate sales. Although, I do enjoy listening to the pitches on some of the new technologies coming. Like AEBN's thing.

That said, I enjoy meeting people. Hearing how they do their programs and business. While I do not agree with a lot of them, it always gives me some new insights to how to do things for my stuff.

No matter the show, I always take something from them. However, it is typically NOT from the seminars, and more in talking to people.

The best investment is meeting folks and getting face to face. While people think all program owners, and king fish whales surf GFY 24/7, they do not. They have no time, or they are in the shadows. Having spent some face time with decision makers in the companies will open the opportunities down the line. So it's worth it for me. Plus I get a break and out of Michigan for a few days.

But I could do without the smoke.

Business? Nah. 'Some' did however. I will not get into names, but I know some good business was done there. But I heard a lot more honest complaints, and seeing behind the curtain then at previous shows.

Other shows last year, everyone was having growth. This year, programs are admitting that is not the case.

AVN has never looked out for the adult internet community - they just milked us and took our money.

The shows organized by our peers, by those who are looking out for our interest are where the action is now.

Good bye AVN, you no longer have the captive audience to rip off.

Long time coming!

I did some business at both AEE & Internext. The parties were bit more muted this year and I skipped the seminars completely however. For a producer like me it's about things like maybe getting a new DVD distribution deal, starting to shoot for another DVD porn company and seeing old friends that I worked with in the VHS days at AEE. At Internext similar things- talking about filming for a program or two, seeing friends like Barefootsies and exchanging ideas, talking to some traffic people, picking some people's brains about different techniques to makes sales, promote my sites etc. So all in all a fairly productive show for me. Only wish I didn't have to suffer a near lethal dose of cigarette smoke to do it... I much prefer the summer Internext in Hollywood, FL. The Diplomat is a much better hotel, no smoking allowed and attendance was much better.

Funniest moment of the week for me was when crossing the street back to the Gold Coast some thick bodied African-American hooker driving on the side street in a car calling me and my friend out and asking if we were looking for a girl! I guess times are tough for the working girls!

Totally agree with you. We had a booth at the AEE show which helped us a lot with the sales of content via broadcast and foreign distribution deals.

As far as Internext goes we had a very productive show. We were able to meet with everyone we wanted to, and even met with additional companies that approached us.

This being said we didn't bother getting badges at Internext as we had no intention of going to the seminars, and we had enough partying.

True dat hoss. Always nice to see you and get the latest ingenuity updates.

On a side note, I kinda went loose into the show, and ended up getting pulled into some meetings, and such. Which was nice. As usual, most did not not have anything to offer me. But we did keep the options open on some side deals for other upcoming projects, and collaborations.

You just never know what will be popping at the shows. I did, unfortunately, miss Fuzebox and a couple of others I wanted to meet up with because of my flight and leaving Wed. But hopefully we can catch up and knock heads soon.

This was my first Internext since Hollywood in 2004, and I was disappointed. I was expecting a show floor with rows of booths, similar to AEE this year (only smaller).

Maybe it's because we're a smaller, solo girl company, but I didn't get the ROI that I would have liked. Seems like it's mostly the "big players" any more.

We did make quite a few contacts at AEE, so the trip wasn't a total waste. But, I'm sure we won't do Vegas Internext again...

Doesn't sound like I missed a whole lot while I decided to keep working. It's the first Internext Vegas I've missed, but if it doesn't get better soon, it may not be the last.

I do not know if is the economy, state of the industry, all of that, none of that... good or bad... I found this conference much more friendly and inviting then some others. A lot more people open to networking, and sharing.

It was less of the usual bullshit... the queens in their crumbling castle,... and people getting back to the basics of business.

It was good. Saw a lot people I wanted to see. Did a little business. Didn't buy a pass. Hanging out around the bar worked just fine.

Plus won plenty of money to cover the whole trip so for basically costing me nothing but my time it worked out real nice.

I agree with Robbie. 2 days of a floor show was laughable when the 2nd day was a GHOST TOWN. Even a few people I had appointments with on day 2 had left early.

The seminars were full but I didn't leave with anything I didn't already know. Though I did find it fucking priceless that during the "cross sale" seminar, you know, the hot topic that all you cry babies won't stop about, there was only ONE or TWO questions or comments when the mic hit the floor and one of them was "what is a cross sale." I went there expecting some serious debate. EXTREME pussies, each and every one of you.

With that said, I met some great people, caught up with some old friends, made some new ones, felt on a lot of tits, married Yurizan dressed as a trekkie, ended up with BIG some content deals that I wasn't even looking for, had something put in my butt at one point, drank a lot of coffee and put some faces to the avatars around here. I almost joined the "Mile High Tranny Club" on the way back to LA with a smoking hot Asian tranny who was on my flight, but it was a very bumpy ride and we had to stay in our seats for the 45 min flight. That would have been BAD ASS. I've banged out chicks on planes, but never a TS.

Bottom line, I'm glad I went just for the social side of it but AVN dropped the ball on Internext if you ask me. They just need to combine the two shows next year.

It was great meeting you Robbie! You go hard man, don't know how you do it. I'll be hitting you up about what we were talking about.

It was good for me. I met alot of people that I used to just talk to on icq. Met alot of DVD guys and a few program owners. I also had alot of fun. I was told by a vet that the shows are what you make of them. She was bang on. (This was my first run)

As for the people bitching about the sales and that, yes there was alot of people talking about that, but as I told them this business goes threw ups and downs. We're going threw the perfect storm right now, but things will turn around. New sites should focus on miro niches and they should focus more on coming up with fresh ideas instead of the same old, same old. If attendances was down like everybody was saying it's a good thing. I don't think I could have possibly made time to try and meet anymore people then I did.

I flew over for the afternoon on Tuesday, and luckily ran into the people I intended to see, so I got out the same evening. I was a little surprised they were closing the show floor at 4 pm, so I didn't see how the exhibits setup was, and I was really surprised to hear that they didn't open on Monday -- one thing about booths is that it gives people a meeting place, especially somewhere like Vegas, where everyone is spread out -- they like certain hotels or get comps in certain casinos and that's where they tend to stay, it's not at all like Florida (of course it's been years since I've made that trek) with everyone in the same venue.

So in that respect, I got my business done, met a few new people -- which was good, and then headed for home. After a lot of years, everything becomes the same, and at some point you're either there to party or you go home.

i had a freakin blast cuz i love Vegas and i did the biz i went in to do. fun, successful show for me and PRkitty that said................

most attendees, including myself, just "assumed" or expected the schedule to follow the one kept in all the years past. you show up Sun. and hit the GFY warmup party to catch up with everyone-see who's there to get on their sched etc. Mon. and Tues. are the show floor and seminars and you get out on Wed. not at all the case this year.........

we all showed up Sun. to Zero pre-show event (every show has a mixer the night before), got ourselves up on Mon. to check out the show floor which didn't exist. 100% of the attendees that didn't actually have a booth assumed the floor was starting on Mon. as in years past. so basically, you were better off showing up in town on Mon. eve when the parties started and leaving on Thurs. morning. everyone was told that the sched was very clear but yet, noone knew the sched. maybe we just don't read.

the parties were great and seeing everyone was priceless. that and the biz we did is all that really matters.

yeah, I was expecting a bloodbath or at least some screaming and yelling, but not even a raised voice during that whole seminar...

That's quite interesting, as industry leaders, such as apple/itunes are starting to move away from encrypting content now, in support of providing a better experience to users....realizing content will be stolen no matter what.

hmmm, wonder who you were talking to. I did not hear anyone asking for work, most people I spoke to were feeling slightly guilty for not doing poorly, and lots of biz deals were consummated.

Definitely one of the better Internext shows I have attended in several years. Of course, I wasn't there for the party, so if that was the goal it may have been disappointing.

I just read the post to goodgirl and her response was, "huh. I never heard either of those comments even once."

True dat, except I missed last years also. Feels weird not going to Vegas in January.

Bite your tongue. They did that once and it sucked.

Encrypted streaming, and it is not noticed at all by the end user.

It always makes me wonder how people can say a show sucked or was unproductive. It truly is about what you make out of it.

People need to do their research about the companies that they want to meet, set up appointments, and know what their needs are so that they can get what they need accomplished at a show. Sometimes I parked my butt in one spot and stopped people as they were walking by and introduced myself. Othertimes I walked around and when I saw someone wearing a badge, I introduced myself. I was amazed tho at how some people reacted to me as if they were shocked that I spoke to them...isn't that what we're all there for? to MEET? NETWORK, create relationships, grow relationships, and SOCIALIZE???

My feet are sore from all the walking that I did. The show floor attendance was disappointing as it was a great set up and allowed for some great networking opportunities. I got a lot of great input and feedback from the exhibitors and sponsors. I have some great ideas to make the showfloor more productive for 2010 and the upcoming Miami show.

Please email me [email protected] and send me your feedback.. I just got in from the airport and will do a thank you post tomorrow after my liver comes out of shock lol

I hope this post makes sense as I'm delirious from the lack of sleep from being in Vegas for 8 days...
