First console game was on the first console.. PONG played it forever hehe
Not sure if it was the first but close was the original Sim City or maybe F16 Falcon (black & white). M1 Tank Platoon by Microprose, wore out the 5 1/4 inch floppies on that one.

Questron, Wizardry, Bards Tale were my favorites... Almost makes me want to buy a Apple 2e if I could get the games too.

BigBen 11-06-2008 03:01 PM

Lemmings and original SimCity were good too.

Where in Time was the hardest of the Carmen Sandiego games but I enjoyed it. Well, there was the Where in Space one but I had moved on by then. I directly attribute those games for the love of research I have as an adult. How many games could come with reference books now and get kids glued?

Sarah_Jayne 11-06-2008 05:12 PM

On the Oregon Trail line..my mom also used to bring one home from her school that was called Deer something..maybe Deer Lake? You had to protect deer in the wild or something like that and sometimes you had to decide to shoot them or not. I remember being traumatized for a good half hour about having to make that choice.

I think I still have the book that came with that game somewhere... I remember it being THICK.

I never played Where In Space, but I probably would've loved it even more.

This is making me want to get my hands on a copy and play it again!

I loved the names of the criminals.

Omega Race, on my commodore Vic 20

RedShoe 11-06-2008 06:32 PM

I of course didn't have the luxury of that big box attached to my commodore. I had to put my games in one at a time.

bhutocracy 11-06-2008 08:52 PM

Bard's Tale I was probably the first game I was properly addicted to and Ultima IV was pretty much the best thing ever until you got a charcter to level 100 and it went back down to 1 again after that because Lord British didn't think that far ahead lol.

It's kinda funny being able to remember when that was brand new and having it's big marketing push. I remember it being in C&VG with a double page spread or something. It would probably be a bit of a trip to kids today to know that the not much has really changed in computer game mags except the graphics even though it's really obvious nothing else really changes when you think about it although the industry has gone on serious ups and downs.. I remember a one page 8bit Paperboy review with all the awesome screenshots.
Just kinda weird but I don't automatically think of Dragon's Lair as "old"... there is still a bit of residual "newness" left over from the marketing... and that goes all the way through the timeline to games like Syndicate etc. It's weird as hell that DukeNukem 3d is someone's first favourite game.. it's in 3d! It only came out like.. 5 years ago right?.. right? oh shit.. 10?.. oh.. 13? Dammit I remember the sidescrolling platform Duke... dammit!!!! Fucking youth of today.

Oregon Trail at school.
BUT OMG.. at home..
Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego.. with a green only monitor. lol
And Jeopardy.

I can remember one of the answers to the jeopardy question being prostitution... and I was like 4.. and I thought it was prosecution... so I used to be like, "Daddy hurry spell prosecution.." then Id get it wrong.. and he'd be all weird that the real answer was prostitution...

I was too young to read most of the words.. so i'd play them for hours on end.. until I'd memorize what words/pictures went with what answers.

Those games made me the nerd I am today.

MikeSmoke 11-06-2008 11:28 PM

My first computer game was one I wrote myself, on a shared PDP-11 - I saved the program on paper tape and whenever I wanted to play, I just put the paper tape into the reader and off it went :1orglaugh

CDSmith 11-06-2008 11:31 PM

First computer game I ever played was Commander Keen (Goodbye Galaxy). It came free with the old 386 I bought wayyy back when.

2nd was Duke Nukem.
