Blu-ray is dead - heckuva job, Sony!

http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=365&tag=nl.e550
Blu-ray is in a death spiral. 12 months from now Blu-ray will be a videophile niche, not a mass market product.

With only a 4% share of US movie disc sales and HD download capability arriving, the Blu-ray disc Association (BDA) is still smoking dope. Even $150 Blu-ray players won?t save it.

16 months ago I called the HD war for Blu-ray. My bad. Who dreamed they could both lose?

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
Delusional Sony exec Rick Clancy needs to put the crack pipe down and really look at the market dynamics.

In a nutshell: consumers drive the market and they don?t care about Blu-ray?s theoretical advantages. Especially during a world-wide recession.

Remember Betamax? SACD? Minidisk? Laser Disk? DVD-Audio? There are more losers than winners in consumer storage formats.

It?s all about volume. 8 months after Toshiba threw in the towel, Blu-ray still doesn?t have it.

Nothing else is native 1080p so there's no other choice. Once you go high def, you won't watch that other crap again.

I dunno, "downloadable content" sounds great, but is really just a synonym for "rental" right now for the studios. If someone ever makes a DRM that doesn't somehow rely on a third party to always authenticate it for the next 30 years, then perhaps it might look more interesting.

Right now, I think it's all about price really. I have a blu-ray player, but simply have stopped buying movies like I used to on DVD. I don't buy DVD's because they are not high-def, and I rarely buy blu-rays because it's ridiculous they are pricing them at $15 more than the DVD in most cases. Once Blu-ray gets down to the sub-$20, and sub-$15 price range, I'd be picking up a lot more content. $30 on a movie is just a bit nuts though.

Get the price of content down to compete directly with DVD, and get the price of lower quality players into the sub-$100 range and I think you could replace DVD. The studios don't seem to really want this though - they saw it as a way to increase prices 25-50% on movies.

There are just not enough movies in blu-ray. As an avid movie buff who loves his Netflix membership and has a huge collection of movies, I have no interest in blu-ray. If there is a new movie that I just have to see in HD, I'll watch it on-demand. The overwhelming majority of movies I watch are not in Blu-Ray.

you=retard. You're just pissed because you invested in a HD-DVD player and movies.

First of that guy is a tard. He is basically plagiarizing an article another tard made like 4 months ago. So welcome to 4 months ago. Geez do you pick your articles like you do women? Just whatever skank ho offers her cunt to you? Do some fact checking first.

FACT: blu-ray is FAR ahead of where DVD was at this point in it's lifecycle. And DVD had ZERO competition to deal with. You do realzie that 99% of TVs sold today are HDTVs and that by Christmas you'll be seeing sub $200 blu-ray players?

FACT: blu-ray's #s are actually rising over last year while DVDs #'s are shrinking.

Anyone that thinks "HD" downloading is in the near future is an idiot. Considering the US has ZERO broadband plan and 20% of the country can't even get boradband and ISPs have ZERO interest in bringing it to them how is HD downloading going to take over physical media? Also consider that the median broadband speed in the US is 2 Mbps. Yes download that "HD" movie from Itunes or Xbox Live in only 7 hours!

Also to compare a "HD" download to a blu-ray and call them the same is being obtuse.

HD download: 720p 4-6 Mbps bit rate( hell even DVD has a bit rate of 8 Mbps )
blu-ray: 1080p 40 Mbps bit rate.

Also you can actually take blu-ray disc to a friend's house and watch it. You can't do that with a "HD" digital download. I mean unless you want to haul your XBOX 360 or PS3 or computer to your friends house.

Also ISPs are now starting to institute caps. Comcast has a 250 GB monthly cap. TW is having trials with monthly caps that are between 5-40 GB. Yes I said 5 GB. A "HD" download is 6 GB. Cox has caps they just don't enforce them yet. At&T and Charter are also considering caps.

You are obviously a hater. All haters are retarded since they use emotion and not LOGIC.

Fact is ALL the studios are now onboard the blu-ray train and they want blu-ray to take over DVD. By next year watch as the number of movies coming out on DVD shrink and blu-ray is the ONLY way to get them on a disc.

I am always amazed at the people who have large collections of mainstream movies on DVD in their home. I don't watch that many movies as opposed to tv shows and what I do watch I wait until they come on HBO or Showtime anyway and let my Tivo record them for me. I pay $110 a month for my DirecTV with receivers and integrated DVR and I feel I get my money's worth this way.

Some people are really into watching the same movie over and over again, especially ones that they like, so the Tivo doesn't work. Me... I watch once and then I'm done. Every now and then something comes along that I can watch multiple times and then I'll pick it up.

I presented an article I read which was posted on a main video editor site. Did I call you names ,you call me names and say Im emotional are you kidding? Did your father invent Blu ray? Is Steve Jobs a hater for Blu ray also? Also got the player for xmas and never bought any movies because the free ones I got with it didnt look much different than the uprezzed dvds on it.Also do you have links for your facts would love to read them.

technically it's possible because my DishNetwork Turbo HD/DVR satellite dish downloads 1080i HD Live in real time,

so does my Digital Cable DVR at my other house, on the same cable my hi-speed internet comes in on.

If your Internet connection is 20mbs or faster you can download 1440 x 1080i full hd in mpeg2 or mpeg4 live in real time.

blueray is a tad larger at 1920 x 1080 so it would take a tad more speed.

its far from dead, every movie commercial i see on tv is 'buy now on dvd or blu-ray', add that up to loads and loads of hd tv's being sold more and more & you can see that itll eventually replace dvd's, what we know today as dvd is blu ray tomorrow. Yes its simple as that, the guy of that blog is way over analyzing it... mark my words

It's beta vs VHS all over again. And frankly, I think it's pretty damn stupid for them to give us the choice.

I have an HD TV and I can see the difference from standard channels to HD channels. While I have a huge DVD collection, I don't watch them enough to make me run out and buy something new. I'm fine the way it is.

yeah I read another article about Blu-Ray's death. Seems that they've kept prices out of reach for the average consumer and costs manufacturers and studios big bucks to put out on Blu-Ray

It has no competition. It'll be fine.

Before you know it, it'll just be called DVD, and be the standard. Physical discs will not go away any time soon. When you download a movie(which is huge, BTW), do you get all of the extras?

Owning media as just a digital source is dicey. Too easy for it be corrupted, deleted, or lost with a hard drive crash -- the latter destroying your entire movie collection.

I was reading an article about how so many pictures taken today with the digital cameras will never be printed and lost eventually, when the owner doesn't keep track of the digital copies, or accidentally deletes them or formats the hard drive and forgets to move them, etc.

Digital vapor ownership is not that appealing. Also, who wants the internet bandwidth tied up while somewhere, some Nascar mouthbreather is downloading the entire Patrick Swayze Blu Ray collection to his hard drive every second?

That's not a future I want to be a part of.

BTW, I love my Blu Ray movies(which I rent from Netflix and Blockbuster). If it exists on Blu Ray, Netflix will have it. They look amazing.

On the blog you posted, this guy had a great response, which makes sense

---------------------------------------------------------------------

LoL, it's funny to hear an educated person imply that Blu Ray HD is a step backwards compared to crappy standard DVD or even lame untrue upscaled garbage DVD's. Blu Ray is a step forward you get a much better picture, full 1080P resolution, True HD. This gives the best possible picture. 1080i is not good enough, if your going HD go 1080P. The difference is 1080i is an interlaced picture which means 1/2 the picture is displayed then the the other half pops up. It happens so fast that the naked eye sees the hole picture yet your eye still detects some flicker and or distortion. 1080P is progressive scan which means the full picture is all at once for the best true image reproduction. Lets also mention other Blu Ray benefits, they can hold more than twice the content of standard DVD.

What does this mean for us? It means longer movies, much larger in depth games, more special features and options. Again how could you call this a step backwards? Lets also mention that Blu Rays are harder to scratch, this means you won't have as many scratched, flawed discs and will have to replace less of them as time goes by. Now for the fools who think Blu Ray is dead lol lets look at all the new HDMI 1.3 technologies such as HD audio, yes Dolby True HD and Master HD are the absolute best audio formats and can only be obtained on Blu Ray.

Now lets look at the video advantage of HDMI 1.3 known as "deep color" what this means is that old DVDs and tv's, show only millions of colors while the new "deep color" technology will show extreme colors in the billions, giving you the best visuals your eye can differentiate between. And guess what format you'll get this technology on.... You guessed it, Blu Ray. Don't listen to fools who don't understand that you must drudge through the bad before you reach the good. Blu Ray is superior and the only way to get the quality HD that you bought that expensive HDTV to get you.

Don't buy a nice HD tv then screw yourself by playing standard def movies. Do it right go for the best. Blu Ray is so much better if you do your research, I still can't believe this article claims that believing in Blu Ray is living in the past, it's just opposite my friends, it is your future for best quality video/audio.

--------------------------------

The guy that wrote that original article is tool.

what is so important about high def? i agree the picture is great but unless you spend countless hours, its just not worth it to the average consumer. hell, im still using the same television i bought 10 years ago. theres nothing wrong with it, so why replace it.

I prefer loading up my hard drive with 720p content. Quality 720p movies taking up 4Gb instead of the 10+ for 1080p without a huge difference between them.

Digital downloads are the only way to go. Forget the DVD type formats. Flashcards or the internet are the only way to go.

What the OP is saying is that no matter what sony does, new products are coming to market that will make paying the high cost of blue ray a non issue.

1080P is 1080P no matter if its downloaded on a blue ray or whatever format... combine the OP's view with the fact that we are lighting up miles and miles of dark fiber every month and ...

nevermind

lol you would never comprehend any of this LMAO

Why buy blu-ray when you can by an up converter dvd player for less then a 100 bucks and play all your old dvds on it at near blu-ray quality?

Yes I will. Most people don't masturbate to a few extra pixels that cost 4 times as much to see.

Its not the formats that killed HD BLue Ray or even the other standards.

I predicted BLu Ray would win the HD wars. I was wrong obviously. I believe that the what happened is simple yet at the outcome was not seen. With Media being as versatile and flexible as it is, Format does not matter. It comes at the production level of things when it comes to television and the internet.

People no longer relie on DVD Players per say, so much as they relie on Internet and What they have as the standard DVD player or even Tivo's. In short I think the masses at large were in no rush to buy the next best thing as predicted by optimistic Marketing guys in the Sony camp. I did however say that it was Unlikely BLu Ray to over come as "Standards" in HD were defined and BLu Ray was proprietary. No one likes Proprietary. It limits the media and requires alot of investment to work with Proprietary methods.

The market basically sat down kept thier DVD players ( much like myself ) and never paid attention.

I have blu-ray through my PS3, and to be honest i'm not too interested in buying lots of movies for it, not now anyway.

My DVD's look fine on my HD tv, and yes you can see a bit of a difference with blu-ray, but just not enough to go out and spend roughly $40 on one blu-ray disc, when i can pick up the dvd for less than half that...

They're not really thinking about it.

From personal experience, much of anything that I own digitally gets lost or accidentally destroyed by me. I've lost some music, pictures and software by just your average human carelessness. Physical copy is the best way to go.

My pictures in the photo album, software on disc and CD music will not easily be lost unless I decide to throw it away. I will admit, I prefer music in digital because I don't like dealing with thousands of CD's.

Most of the movies don't look that spectacular. I'm talking about the older ones, or movies not shot digitally to begin with. I just rented Godfather(the Coppola Restoration), and while it looked better than I've ever seen it, it wasn't mind blowing.

The newer movies, like big blockbusters and digital animation(Shrek, Surf's Up etc) make the jaw drop. Some that stood out as just perfect were Across the Universe, The Assassination of Jesse James, 30 Days of Night, Iron Man, Transformers, The Fall, Sunshine.

Also, the transfer has to be done properly with the best possible encoding. Sometimes, they don't seem to give a fuck and just compress the shit out of the movie so they can fit more extras.
