you don't get it all back - only the taxable portion of that donation. it still costs to donate.

ok. fair enough... my ignorance comes from my lack of experience.

here's a start. next time you see someone from a reasonable charity in a mall asking for donations stick a $100 in the bin and walk away. Take no credit for it - only you need to know. It will hurt for a second if you don't have a lot of income, but the feeling you'll get inside will make your christmas one of the best ones you have ever had.

Actually, I meant lack of experience with money... I've donated to local causes before here in LA, but I had to stop when I tried to befriend the homeless guy at the 7-11 next to my work, and he started to tell me how "this was his job' and homey turned out to make more than I did selling $5000 tubs. Now I know that the question was not meant about homeless guys and giving him $5, but man that experience sure stuck with me and I'm a cynic anyways. I've given to local churches before and my g/f is a Catholic active in her church, so we do give a little. I just took the assumption that the original question was geared towards bigger comtributions. :)

Well said SleazyDream...:thumbsup I often do that, especially during the Thanksgiving and x-mas season. When the family is out spoiling ourselves and we see some less fortunate people, it feels very good inside to give them something, whether it is cash, food, clothes, toys etc.... it is just a good feeling. The mrs and I try to teach our kids this quality in life and they get a real kick out of giving gifts to less fortunate people.:thumbsup
In fact last x-mas my oldest who was 12 at the time, asked us to not spend a penny on him that year, he wanted us to go to a shelter for homeless kids and give a boatload of presents to a few kids rather then himself...we had a great time doing it as well.


I had to add the ending to last years holiday season fun. After we spent severl hours at a home for homeless kids, bringing a ton of food, presents, cash, We were so proud that my oldest son wanted to do this, we still spoiled the shit out of him, maybe even more than usual because we all felt so good about it.....

try the little things like canned food drives. The US Postal service has a cool drive where you just leave bags of canned goods on your doorstep and they pick them up.
