his bad eye getting infected again and he is in pain.He is currently on 3 antibiotics and its not stopping the infection. the red mange on his paw keeps cracking and bleeding. He is sleeping more and more and he looks so uncomfortable and isnt the peppy dog he always was.this decision is breaking my heart but how much do i make him suffer for my selfish need not to let go..

Divorce is finalized then?

Just kidding.

So sorry to hear this. Nothing worse than that helpless feeling. Good luck to you in the next few days, just try to remember the suffering that could have continued.

Ohhhh, I'm sorry Tony I just went thru this with my dog a few months back. It's so hard to let go of a family member like a dog ... She had mange and was not doing well at all ... I decided to spend the money to treat her and I feel everyday she suffers.. If you don't mind me asking how old is your dog ??

We have to talk to the vet. My vet wont give me a straight answer on it, so we have to have a come to jesus. He has red mange. That means his immune system is really bad. He has a tumor the size of a golf ball in his lymph nodes not good. Wont operate on the eye because it would kill him he is so sick. He also have cushings disease. I get sad faces from the vet but nothing else. No suggestions other than to treat and spend money.
At the end of day its a business. CJ dies the money flow stops... a couple of grand and counting. He is not doing good. I dont think Im doing him a favor waiting until he is shitting himself and cant walk. I saved him from death 2 and half years ago. Someone never took care of him; a sheriff in fact. He/she dumped him off at the pound to die basically. He was covered in sores and his spine fused together because he was hit by car and they did nothing. He has had the best of everything. I would gladly keep up the medicine and cleaning of wounds several times a day routine if I knew he was is going to get better. From the erupted cornea we went to red mange thats never happened before with him. He is on three antibiotics and he has pus again all over his eyes. And the cancer is just waiting in the dark really rear its ugly head.

That is so hard. Tough to say anything to someone going through that, like "Well, at least he had a couple good years with you" and so on, but the sentiment is there.

You know what we (I) mean. Sorry you're dealing with it and very sorry to hear about it. I do not envy your decision on the matter, either way.

Best of luck.

Ive been there a few times with pets. It sucks major.

But after watching loved ones die of cancer I often think: I wish we felt the same way about humans. (let them choose)

Best of luck.

I just had to put my cat down a few months ago. The hardest decision I ever had to make and it still makes me cry to this day. But in the end he was so sick and no chance of getting better and I had to do the humane thing and put him down. I hate myself for it but I could not see him live that way.

My heart goes out to you. It's never easy letting go of something you love but if it means that he will be in a better place then it is probably the best thing to do.

Sorry Bro..Been there. We as loving pet owners often seek advice from the Vets, that 90% of the time truely try and help. But at the end it's up to us.
Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be the right thing. Peace.

i had the same decision to make - unfortunately the clinic i use has two vets and one told me to put her down because in his opinion she would not recover and the nicer one who had known my dog since she was a puppy and knew I didn't want to let her die until i was sure she wouldn't recover told me I wasn't doing the wrong thing by keeping her going, that she wasn't in pain and she might recover - so I waited until the last possible moment. I don't know, dogs can't talk, her last 6 weeks were not good but she wasn't in pain, just fucked up and bewildered why she was so sick.

it does sound to me like in CJ's case it might be time to let her/him go peacefully. doesn't sound like she's ever going to recover enough to be happy and comfortable.

such a brutal thing to have to decide - but we treat our pets better and with more humanity than we do ourselves - humans should have the same option pet owners have when a human is suffering and there is no hope.

you're doing the right thing either way you decide - you don't know what CJ wants, the will to survive is strong for humans and animals, she might if she could communicate say she wants to hang in or she could say she wants to go now.

It sucks to have to make a decision like this... Me personally, I wouldn't put the dog down... But that's not always the best idea.

Sorry that that Tony... I lost my dog last year on Christmas Day, so this Christmas isn't going to be a happy one for my family because even the kids keep talking about her

Even with your heart breaking you will know in your heart what is best for CJ

Awww that's sad, but in some cases its best and we have to think about the animal instead of ourselves... My condolences, and know that he will be in a better place.

Sorry to hear that. It's always sad to lose someone you love.

I sold my dog today. She didn't like it at all in the apartment. Now she will hang out with a male dog on the country where she can run all she wants. I know she will have a much better life out there, but I will miss her so much.

You know I just went though this recently (6 weeks ago), had to put my dog of 17+ years to sleep.

In your dog's case it sounds like although he had it tough for much of his life he did have a loving home for the last part of it. You're obviously a good owner and love your dog... that's huge in a dog's life. In fact it's everything.

My advice: Just keep the most important thing in focus (it sounds like you're already doing it), that being --- doing what's best for him. You'll have plenty of time to grieve and mourn his loss later.

It's definitely been one of the toughest times of my life, and toughest decisions. I wish you all the best. Need to talk about anything, shoot me an ICQ anytime. (sig)
