be careful with pits... unpredictable...

I had 2 brothers that were the sweatest dogs and great around kids... then one day I found 1 dead in my back yard... the other one killed his brother completely out of the blue and then a year down the road bit the neighbors kid... thankfully the kid was fine...

both are intellgent dogs, and like humans, contrary to their rep. Their rep is just because assholes raise assholes, whether it's humans or dogs. the rotty is more particular to a single person, though.

well said Juge... and by the way the person who said he has a 'red nose' pit bull earlier in this thread actually does not unless I'm mistaken. THIS is a red nose pit bull pictured with me here, this is the same dog in a closer view. Notice that his nose is actually red. It's not enough for the fur around a black nose to have a pinkish shade, you'll know a red nose when you see him. Also, you're not supposed to handle your pits as roughly as you are in that picture, i.e. swinging them around in the air. A Pit that is even a little bit rough is a danger, and if you treat them roughly, even playing, you bring out a side of them that is best left alone. You may not see it yourself as your Pits love you, but the first person they run into if they ever get off-leash might see it, and that's not good. The first thing I was told by the trainer I hired for my dogs is NOT to play fighting games with them, and only play 'pulling' games if they seem to take it pretty calmly.

Pit bulls CANNOT be trained as 'attack' dogs. You have to be able to call a dog off for it to be an attack dog, and you have to be able to train it to attack discriminately. Pits will not be called off once they attack (you have to put a stick in their jaws and lift thier hind legs off the ground), and if you train them to attack they'll attack everything, they will NOT discriminate. At least not reliably. Any reputable trainer will tell you that Pit Bulls are completely unsuitable as 'attack' dogs.

Rocki I feel what you said about your pits. I have two and they're sweet as pie but I've heard the stories. I consider my pits to be as potentially dangerous as loaded guns and I don't take any chances with them. It's well documented that Pits with no history of violence can and occasionally will commit extreme mayhem without any visible provocation.

A pit will protect you and your property on instinct alone, and they're very good at telling welcome guests from intruders. I got my dogs because Pits are loyal to their owners, they're known to be intelligent dogs and if they're handled with respect and caution they're great dogs. Also because that's about the only kind of dog my local Humane Society had to offer. If you get lazy, or you try to make them 'tough' or you're irresponsible in some other way they can be very dangerous. I only recommend Pit Bulls for adult-type people. Shelters are full of Pit Bulls because of guys who want what they consider a 'tough' dog, they treat it rough and play rough with it when it's young and then realize when it grows up that their Pit has turned into more dog than they can handle, or their little pup has grown into a dog that just wants to kill everything it sees.

Pete, I gotta recommend a Rotty!! You will be happy you got one for sure...they are sweet, loyal, strong and will scare the shit out of trouble before it starts. ;)

I've had both Rott and a Pit. I'd go with the Pit, short hair is a blessing after you've lived with a rottweiler!

Either way, you shouldn't try to "train them to attack" at all. Either will act in defense of it's family and the last thing you want to do is teach a pit bull aggression, they have plenty. If anything you want to teach a pit the opposite, make your goal to teach him to be gentle - bonding is very important with a pit. You need him to love you and your family.

Also no one's going to fuck around a house with either dog.

there is a theory that black nose Pit Bulls are generally smaller and more aggressive and red nose Pits are larger and somewhat more docile. Most vets and animal professionals say that the color of the nose is completely random, red is just a recessive gene color for the nose and there is absolutely no difference in the dogs. I believe them.

Any Pit will do. I recommend getting one from your local shelter if possible, NEVER buy any cat or dog as thousands are euthanized every day for lack of a home. Even a grown Pit can be ok if he's not aggressive and hasn't been used for fighting, it's great if you can get a very young one so you can bring him up the right way from the start.

I only read 1/2the thread so not sure if this was said already, but please learn about the dogz b4 u buy one. And look into the breeder. Rotties do not need to learn ot be trained to attack, its breed into them. And don;t get a god someone trained for you. Take the dog what ever bread to a trained and have then work _with_ you. The world doesn't need more problems rotties so please look into it if u get one, rotttties are GREAT dogs but NOT for everyone.

But seriously folks...I was not raised a "dog" person, but the universe had other plans for me and through the years I've fostered a handful of strays. One was a Pit and she was one of the sweetest, most obedient beasts I've ever known.

My current companion is a Rottie/Setter/Chow mix, with some Fruit Bat/Alf/Sparky from South Park/Whoknowswhatall thrown in for good luck. As a pup she had perfect Rottie markings, but she outgrew them. She is an absolute doll, but if you were to peer over the fence unannounced, you would think otherwise.

As others have said, don't worry so much about the breed. A well-raised dog will be loyal to its people, and will tend to ward off strangers without actually attacking.

the problem with buying animals is that breeders treat pet animals like livestock, and with so many getting killed everyday why encourage breeders to bring more into the world?

actually, your chances of getting a mistreated are probably higher buying from a breeder than getting one from your local animal shelter. If you ever do a web search on dog breeders you'll find horror stories in abundance, it's known to be a corrupt and wicked trade...

I was told the same thing as far as training my "bully breed" to attack. "Bully Breeds" will not let you call them off when they are in the heat of battle, no matter HOW much training they have had. Because it's their natural instinct....... the same way that a grey hound will one day dart out of the house and lap the block 3 times (regardless of training) with you screaming "Come here boy" at the top of your lungs.

No, I meant I would vote to get a Rotty instead of a Pitbull. The Rotty seems to be less stubborn. Then again, I am comparing a female Rotty to a male Pitbull... so even that makes a huge difference.

Yes, they are pretty rare.
They were bread for their capacities, not for their looks so they all look a bit different. My Tosa is often mistaken for a Rhodesian Ridgeback, but Tosa's get a lot bigger (mine would be around 60 kilograms fully grown)

They aren't allowed in many European countries due to their fighting (wrestling dog of The East) history.

Ive heard one of the only ways to get a pit bull to release is to stick your finger in its ass.. not sure about that but i would release something if a finger went up my ass..

This whole fight dog, bully breed thing is sick.. The dogs are a beautiful breed but the owners are fucking morons most of them.. and they use them as trophy items to show off and to look tough..

My wife is a Vet Technician, and we see lots of cases with owners of pitt bulls where the owner just has the dog to show off... and when it comes down to a $400-1000 bill they would rather put it to sleep.. thats fucking pathetic.. if your not willing to make an effort to find money for your companion you should be fucking shot!

#1. If you get a rotty from a rescue they will have already determined if it is agressive or not. Rescues dont take dogs with agression problems.

i do not want a dog to straight out attack, i want a dog to defend. i worded my sentence wrong. i would like to be able to jog through the forest at night and if someone tries to rob me the dog can protect me. thus for needing attack skills.

Ooh ~ I want either a Shiba Inu or a Boston Terrier for myself, they're the perfect size and demeanor. Is the Shiba Inu high or mid energy? The only one's I've met are very calm.

Just remember the smarter the dog you get the more you will have to sit on them to make them behave. They will always be testing you to find out who is boss. As for pit bulls, they can be great dogs, but not always very bright. So make sure your breeder is reputable and track their lines. You get what you pay for hold very true when it comes to purebred dogs.

I have three dogs, couldn't attack shit. But if they wake me up barking in the night I know my pet Mossberg will take care of the problem.

i am going to go to a few breeders and go with who i think is best...i think i want to spend around $800 - $1500.

He's really calm. But got the energy to play anytime. He's a lot of dog to be that little :) I would recommend one to anyone, I have seen many dogs that I have had myself and others in my family but the Shiba's are just great. To off my relatives has Shibas as well.

this is totally, 100% incorrect. Purebred dogs are dumber and have more behavior problems than mutts due to inbreeding, mutts are FAR smarter and more adaptable.

when you buy a Pit from a breeder, what you buy is a dog usually trained by a mouth-breathing moron who is breeding the dog for aggression and often fighting.

if you really love dogs, and you SHOULD if you're even contemplating getting a Pit, you won't buy from a breeder, they're the worst thing that ever happened to this breed of dog.

I bet most people would be shocked to see someone scratching the stomach of a rotty or pitbull and see it roll on it's back so you can scratch it even more. They really do love to be around humans.

On another note, I think it's sad when a dog bites a stranger who uncautiously approaches a few kids in their own back yard to ask for directions or something. Everyone would love to have a dog who is smart enough, and loyal enough, to protect their 'family' from a stranger who has no right to be on their property coming at your uprotected kids - yet, they have to put these dogs down... I would fight that to the end if it were my dog...
