Did you build your house?

Did architecture and saw many a house built with family.

Designing houses now and was wondering if anybody here ever built their own house.

Did you get what you wanted. Any headaches or proud of what you accomplished?

Sixty years ago my grandfather and his brother built the house my mother grew up in. My grandmother was put into a nursing home about 5 years ago and no one has lived there.

Now I am helping my brother restore it so our mother can live in it again. She and my dad retired to a lake house, but my dad died a couple of years ago and she wants to move back into town.

We had to jack it up to replace all the rim joists that were termite-infested and raise the celings from 7' to 8'. We raised the floor in an addition to the level of the rest of the house, added a bathroom and central heat/air, replaced the cabinets and appliances and modified the floor plan. We had the original clawfoot bathtub refinished and refitted with new hardware.

We found lots of cool stuff including the studs in a wall where a couple of our mom's cousins, one who died, had written their names.

It would have been easier to knock it down and rebuild from scratch, but we reused a lot of the original materials including the hardwood floors. It's been a pain in the ass, but also very satisfying to do with my brother what our grandfather did with his brother so long ago.

I hope that in another 50 or 60 years our grandchildren can experience the same thing.

Outstanding!!!!

My Dad built all our houses. He took up the trade while in college/army. Saved a ton of money doing the rebuilding.

I helped him design our first house. I was just a kid but had studied architecture and sure enough it got passed by the board! They didn't know an 11 year old kid had designed it. I was crazy like that as a kid. I used to design toys and send them to toy companies that would PAY ME thinking I was an adult!

If you really take pride in your home or real estate investments taking courses in rehab and construction and architecture can be a joy as well as a major savings.

Good for you doing a family project. That's a blessing!
