lol its hard out ther for a nigerian pimp....in all seriousness how can your friend believe this crap, sending 2,700 to get 3000 back for no reason is pretty suspect but sending 2,700 to get 10 grand back is ridiculous

haha....why all in nigeria..is the gov't there that lax about scammers?

dig0 05-16-2007 12:18 PM

Hahaha

When I had a business on Ebay 2 years ago, I got contacted by a Nigerian asshole once.

He was willing to pay almost double the price for an Ipod, saying he'll pay bla bla.

So he wanted me to send him a "sent" recite, that I mailed him the Ipod and he would transfer me the money.

To my surprise I never got the money, though I sent him a well packed piece of dog in an Ipod box. I even perfumed it! Strange how nobody ever wrote from Nigeria again...

They even got this scam where they will talk to you through dating sites for YEARS and slowly bring up the fact that they would like to come and visit but they can't afford the plane ticket. Then they throw out some sort of random number like $3000 and say if you can send the money he/she will fly out and you can get married... I had a friend tell me she gave some money to another friend who was trying to do this. And her friend sent this money and, SURPRISE, she never heard from the guy. Man I still make fun of her for that.

but to say that "women" specifically are stupid for one female falling for this is ignorant. beyond that, the number of spelling errors and typos in response to this post indicate that being a retard isn't limited to the female gender.

TA i'm sorry for your friend, it sucks you can't just explain this sort of thing to people who are not hanging out on the internet all day seeing this spam day in and day out. i suppose she is just about to learn that lesson the really hard way. :Oh crap

419eaters.com is a great website. very funny :thumbsup

...they recently had ANOTHER show on tv here about these scams, absolutely fucking unbelievable that anyone could fall for this shit after there's been so much publicity about them for so many years now.

They interviewed several people who were up to $100,000 in the hole, and who just kept on sending money, honestly seeming to believe that King Kwango the 9th's oldest son is going to transfer $20,000,000 to their account as soon as he can free the money from his dead fathers bank...

They showed one old woman who had basically fucked up her whole life and sold her house and everything and still continued to send money... once she sent the first lot she got hammered with literally thousands of letters, emails and phone calls and those fuckers fleeced her for EVERYTHING, and there was nothing her family could do about it and her bank allowed her to do it all.

I feel bad for the older people who finally get online.. only to be scammed all to hell. By the time kids have a credit card they know all about spam and the dangers of the net, but the older people are still clueless :(

My 85-year-old grandfather asked me the other day, "So is that what they call a laptop?"

:(

:Oh crap

Bet that is not the last attempted contact :winkwink:

Know of one instance where someone sent.. can't remember the amount, but around $5000. The next tale was the sender was needed to visit the bank in Nigeria to sign some paperwork for.. whatever.. zillions - and this person actually flew there - duh?

But.. he never got near a bank and was kidnapped from the hotel and that started a long and boring negotiation process with LE in an attempt to get him released.

All was well in the end, - the kidnappers released him unharmed for a relatively small ransom - around $10K ish. But... could have been worse...

I am pretty sure seasoned internet surfers and people who are familiar with the web have heard plenty of this scam.

However, new people who come online are still niave and fall for this scam. It's sad

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 05-16-2007 10:54 PM

$2,700 buys a lot in Nigeria:

In New Zealnd the polie got records of all people who had made an international transfer to Nigeria in a given month. There were about 100 people. The contacted all of them and about half had legitimate reasons, the other half were nigerian scam. Almost all of the people contacted refused to admit they were in a scam and told the police to piss off. the average amount they had transferred in total was around $200k EACH. LOL

Yeah, my mother sent some money (I don't know how much, at least a few hundred dollars) to some "psychic" in Germany. Supposedly he is a gold prospector and needs some money to invest in a machine to help him find gold...

... my jaw dropped when I heard that. She knows about the Nigerian scams but I still worry about her sometimes. :/

I remember two people tried to scam me when I advertised tutoring services online last year. They were out of the country and were sending their kids here to study. Their emails sounded so suspicious that I didn't even reply. Turns out it's a fairly common scam.

CherryLipsRosa 05-17-2007 04:32 PM

I was just going to say that maybe something should be done at Western Union when people are sending money to Nigeria, not stop it completely but at least inform them right then and there about a possible scam going on with some examples.

Fresh 05-17-2007 04:44 PM

ask your friend where i can send my 2700. Seems like a pretty good deal :2 cents:
