Editing High Def. Will I need a graphic card with 512 MB memory or 256 MB?

I am going to be doing alot of HD video editing, and I was told that my graphic card will need to have 512 MB onboard memory.

I am looking into getting a sytem which will have the 256MB ATI MOBILITY? RADEON® X1800.

Is that not sufficent? Do you need 512 MB of memory?

If you want the quality you're lookin' for you'll definitely need a 512 or a higher vid card and lots of RAM (probably a gig or so), HD space(I mean lots! :D) plus a good processor to finish it off. I would recommend ATI+Athlon

Thanks, but is it a must to have 512?

I will have 2 gigs of ram plus a dual core 2.33 GHz.

Who told you the graphic card would need 512 MB of memory to edit HD? Look at the minimum specs of the editing app you intend to use, and if it specifies any type of level of ram for the graphics card then you probably need to follow that recommendations. Otherwise try it with 256 and seee what happens. You can always upgrade the graphics card later.

I read it on a editing message board, but of course it might be inaccurate...thats why I'm asking here, to see if anyone knows for sure. It might be a bunch of balony
