As for if the model was coked out. I don't know, and don't care to know. She certainly didn't seem like she was, and didn't go to the bathroom over and over, or was ever in there for longer then it takes to pee. At the end of the shoot she was pretty tired, and went to bed within a couple hours. Slept 2 hours longer then I did. She seemed much more like a stoner then a coke head any day, and no.... she didn't pull out the weed (damn her! -

), so I wouldn't put money on it or anything, but I'd say she was sober the entire 8 hours of the shoot, and the other 10 hours that she was sleeping and woke up this morning.

Some photographers set up their lighting in order to get large pupils on purpose. For some people that is sexy. Some photographers do it by accident because they don't know how to prevent it with their lighting. Huge pupils does not always equal "crack" or any other form of drug. Just for the record

Cool! I'm still such a hack with still photography I had no idea how I got her pupils so big, but I did have the ambiant lighting really dim. Now I can save all my coke for myself!

I don't necessarily agree with this statement but every photographer does things differently. I personally don't like to see large pupils - nothing about that is sexy to me. But I do respect the opinion of other shooters who love to shoot that way

I shoot outside so I have never run into large pupils, but looking at it from a scientific standpoint, I would think that if you shot in a very dimly lit room the models pupils would be very large. By the time the flash or flashes go off and the picture is captured I would guess that the pupils would be captured in their dilated state before they had time to react to the light. And as long as you didn't take pics to fast you would be able to keep taking shots of the models dilated pupils due to the low low lighting in the room.

Just a guess though because I have never read anything or taken any classes on the subject.

Your absolutely right. Your pupil is like a camera lens aperture. When you walk into a dimely lit room, your pupils automatically open up (become larger) in order to let in more light so your brain can interpret what your eyes are seeing. When you walk outside into the light, your pupils become smaller. Your pupils are on automatic pilot and dialate depending on how much light your brain needs to interpret and focus on what your looking at.

If you take a photograph of your subject while they are in a dimely lit room, chances are you'll get a picture with larger then normal pupils. Also, anytime the pupil is dialated and your taking pictures, you run the chance of getting red-eye in your shots.

For all my point-n-shoot buddies out there. If your getting red-eye in your pics...it's prolly because your shooting indoors in dimely lit rooms. Best thing to do is turns some lights on or shoot outside.
