The only thing I learned was to put as much thought and money into your speaker cables if you want your system to kick. My bud thought he had a blown center and found out he only needed an even heavier gauge cable for that speaker. It's a fucking jumper cable

The only thing i've ever owned has been Onkyo. Always had heard they where kickass and excellent quality. There revceivers and amps have always sounded great to me. Heres a quick package I found a crutchfield you can checkout. I'm sure though that there are tons of other places to buy.

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...0&I=700ONKYOHT

Good luck, home theatars rock!

It all depends on how much you want to spend. My SS system actually came in a box, for around $500, and I love it (Kenwood). If you want to build your own, it will cost you an east grand just to equal my system in a box, so figure on dropping $1500-2000 before you even notice a difference.

Also, SPEND THE MONEY for the best speaker wire you can get. I didn't think it would make a huge difference, but it does. Do it right from the start.

As for your DVD player, just make sure you get a progressive scan that has all the features you want. I'm not a big brand name guy with DVD players (I have a Zenith), but get at least a middle of the line one. I personally wouldn't pay for the "Sony" name again (my first one was a Sony), but I know people who swear by them.

Oh, and don't forget to pick up a Tivo while you're out. No home theater system is complete with a Tivo!

Have fun!

An alternative to Tivo: Ultimate TV

My friends just picked this up and they say it's the best thing ever. Something to consider anyways.

Acoustic Research Speakers

s50's

Acoustic research with the HK amp, it's pretty hard to beat the combo.

My favorite would be Yamaha amp(the more expensive ones) and Paradigm for the speakers.(preferably studio series, but monitors are also quite good) and a Paradigm Servo 15 sub.
As for the speaker wire - the best way to choose one is to listen to a few different ones connected to YOUR system.

Shemp,

I have a Toshiba SD-6109c and a 36" Toshiba tube for a few years now. It kicks ass but my model doesent play mp3's or video cd's, newer ones do though. It also has the optical input youll need for the HDTV.

My friend also hooked me up with some Venturi American Made speakers (4 surround + 1 center) and a 240 watt amplified sub woofer. I have to crack the windows in the house when i crank it up to keep them from blowing out. It's awesome on dvd movies like Appocolypse Now, Pearl Harbor, U-571, makes my cats fucking FREAK OUT!!!!!

bwahahahaa
Cheers!

i run B & O (Bang & Olufsen) Speakers in the Front and JBL in the back and center , Big Screen Panasonic .

B & O is great if you also care about the look of your system

Take a look here !

SHEMP it depends what you wan't to spend.
5k
10k
30k
100k

Do you wan't to add Shaking Generators to your couch along with low bass from the subs?

What type of music you listen to has a huge impact on the type of speakers you use.

Are you a pure hi fidelity freak cause these are the people who notice the difference of speaker wire that costs 10 bucks a foot and Pure Silver cables that can cost up to 5 grand for 2 cables.

When your building a system MONEY TALKS...

There is Kenwood,Onkyo,Pioneer

And there is Krell,Sunfire,Mcintosh

There is Bose,Boston Acoustics

Or Klipsh,Energy and B&W

YOU HAVE TO SET A PRICE

Just to give you an idea of what the Amperage will cost if you go with Sunfire and use a 5 channel amp and a 2 channel amp your looking at 8 grand for JUST 2 amps.. You want to run 7 channels and Your Subs will be amplified themselfs.
Pre-Amp
http://www.lexicon.com/MC1/index.html

5 Channel Amp
http://www.sunfire.com/products/cinemagrandsig.shtml

2 Channel Amp
http://www.sunfire.com/products/stereoamp.shtml

2 Subwoffers
http://www.sunfire.com/products/subsignature.shtml

These Amps will power anything you throw at them. A good Match with Sunfire is Klipsh for Loud bassy stuff and B&W for More vocal and easy listening.

A great DVD player for the money is the Pioneer elite for 2k..

Cables and Speaker wire are a Whole other issue..

The new pre-amp lexicon makes is 8 grand.

IT will cost you THOUSANDS to get the same affect in a house then you would in a car..TO push that much air in a house will set you back Big TIme.

This is the difference between mainstream and True Home theatre and Fidelity.

My father was a Violinist and Taught me music and what REAL Fidelity is. I have been a Hi FI Freak since the age 10. Oh I like Guns as well.

Snow,

it used to be easy. I would go to the store and throw a few tho
around and get McIntosh or Mark levinson equip and B & W or
JBL Pro speakers. (I still have a marantz tube amp too) Ive been out of touch with the audio industry for nearly twenty years now, so i appreciate all the responses. Ive been impressed with even the mid price systems ive been hearing. I dont have a set budget, if it knocks me on my ass, then thats the one.

thanks

B&W 804's front and rear...B&W center and subwoofer. Check out www.bwspeakers.com. Sony S9000ES DVD Player. This is my setup and I have never heard better.

For amplification I would suggest Rotel pre amp and 5 channel. Forget about consumer level crap like JVC, Harman Kardon etc,
It's junk.

The Sony unit will let you play SACD's as well.

there's another important issue you should remember !

If the room this gear goes in, is setup wrong
( walls, floor, sealing, furniture ) you will loose more of the sound quality then you you can possibly imagine no matter how much $$ you spend

i redid my walls in the room ( accustic carpet ) cost $2.5
