Tech Question - Help Appreciated...
I need some opinions. My video editing computer died and I'm now stuck with 2 options. I'm basically screwed because the video capture card I have (Miro DC 30 Pro) will not work with Windows XP (which seems to come installed on everything now).
So... here's my options, unless you guys can think of something better. 1) Get a new capture card that works with XP. This is the cheapest route but it also means that I'm stuck with one system. I do a lot of video on my sites so as video is processing, I'd just be stuck waiting. 2) Get a new system with XP. I would then have to remove XP (never did anything like that before) and install something like Windows 98 SE. This is obviously a more expensive route but at least I'd have a system dedicated to only video. If you were in this situation, what would you do? thanks in advance for any support. - PornAddict |

hmmm I have never video edited but if you do it often and really want a seperate system I would go out and buy a new system. But why would you want to scrap WinXP on the new system and add win98SE? WinXP is super stable (as much as w2k) but also adds better compatability, also a new system will be much more poweful than the one you probally have and i know video editing requires a faster clock and more ram, not to mention more HD space. Anyways id you dont want to spend the money buy a WinXP compatible vid card. Also changing OSs isnt too hard, there are lots of newbie tutorials all over the net, make sure you do a clean install though...good luck and that sucks it died :-/

Personally, I think the ideal situation is to have a dedicated video editing machine. Some video processes are time consuming and running other processes in parallel can screw things up, so that if you only have one computer and you want to do some of these things, it's "let's make a pot of coffee" time.
Also, if you REALLY are into video editing, and you want the most bang for the buck, you gotta go with a Mac, and that's coming from someone who's never owned anything but a PC/Windows machine ever since CP/M died out. I just know from the people who really know that when it comes to video, Mac is hands-down better.

XP capture cards use WDM drivers and have ditched using VFW completely making them FAR more stable. Go the XP option and find an XP graphics card.
