If there are any local webmasters that are interested in going.. there is a small group of Michigan webmasters that I get together with frequently and we're having a lunch/barbeque next Wednesday from about noon-whenever.

We'll be in the vicinity of Walnut Lake in Bloomfield Hills. If anyone wants to attend please just call me on the toll free line or shoot me an ICQ. It's a great group of people and we're always interested in expanding the group.

Detroit does suck although there are definitely worse cities. Besides, we have some of the nicest suburbs in the country and that's where we all live. Well, except Labret, I think he lives in Detroit. But, I'd even like him to go although I suspect he wouldn't.

Yeah but I live on 6 mile basically, and as everyone knows, 8 mile being the border between black and white. I live where it gets whiter with each city block. I am in the 50/50 region. I live 3 blocks from Grosse Pointe, which has been called the Beverly Hills of the Midwest. God bless institutionalized racism and economic red lining.

Im smack dab in the buffer zone, 3 blocks to the west of me... ghetto, 3 blocks to the east of me... millon dollar homes.

Still a Detroit address, but not many white people live in "DETROIT". No way no how.

Why Detroit? Simply put, I fucking love Detroit.

This could end up quite the rant.

Detroit, what can you say. At one time the wealthiest fastest growing city in the USA. The hub of the auto industry, an industrial giant.

Then an amazing thing happened. The African American population moved in from the southern states for cheap jobs in the auto industry.

White people freaked the fuck out. Race riots, slums, ghettos, the Klan, you name it, whitey went ape shit. And so began the largest and best example of "white flight" that this country has ever seen. Millions fled into the suburbs.

What happens when over the course of 40 years a largely poor and uneducated population take over one of the most prosperous cities in the USA?

Take over a city filled with the most amazing architecture and city planning ever seen in the midwest?

It becomes a ghetto almost over night.

You can drive through Detroit for hours and hours and drive through neighborhoods of amazing brick turn of the century home that are now ghettos. Neighborhoods of houses that anywhere else would cost 6 figures and up just laid to waste. Its like driving through the set of a mad max movie.

And in isolated pockets of the city you can find these isolated villages of mansions that were once owned by the likes of Henry Ford, politicians, monsters of history.... just completely surrounded by ghetto that goes unrivaled.

Im from the west coast, we dont have any old architecture, brick homes, or really cool historic districts. Let alone ones that have just been laid to waste. The ghetto is truly one of the most depressing things I have ever seen, but one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. And there is ALOT of ghetto. Damn near the whole city and Detroit is fucking HUGE.

And surrounding this city, an imaginary line that seperates black and white. Cities like Grosse Pointe that border the City of Detroit. This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. You stand in the middle of Mack Ave and on one side of the street, ghetto. Look on the other side of the street, clubs, resteraunts, property value just shot up into the millions in a matter of feet. Never have I seen a contrast like that.

Its the best example of economic red lining I have ever personally witnessed. And you can see it everywhere.

Thats just the history part of Detroit that I love, and I barely scratched the surface.

The whole murder city and anger aspect of Detroit I love as well. Fuck around in Detroit, and you die. The way it should be.

Detroit. You call it armpit, I call it the greatest living sociological experiment still in progress. Detroit rules.

i see where you're coming from but still, if you want history, old buildings and atmosphere, and absolutely nothing even remotely close to a ghetto - you should take a look at Boston - simply the best city to live in the States imo.

i love detroit but i wish it was more populated sometimes. you go downtown and you barely see any people unless there is a big festival sometimes. you go to a place like new york and its crazy how many people there are. you leave the club in detroit and theres a group of not even 20 people talking and within 5 minutes theres 3 cop cars shining their lights on you telling you to go home. as beautiful of a city as detroit is, thats the only thing i dont like. not to mention how fun it is to fuck with the bums downtown, i've yet to see any bums that can hustle as good as detroit bums. i never give them more than 25 cents but its pure comedy fucking with them.

thats one more thing i loved about Boston - people everywhere, just walking around looking for fun. Newbury street is a dream come true - 2 miles of restaurants, cafes, bars, etc, all both indoors and outdoors and all full of people. Boston is exactly what a city should be. NY is nice too in that aspect, but it's too crowded and dirty there - and a lot of bums and 5 dolla rolex jamaican salesmen. Canal streat is a disgrace.

yeah i agree, new york is a shithole from what i saw. i only liked the fact that it was very lively. detroit wont even get close when you have cops telling people in the streets to quit loitering. another thing i dont like about detroit is the public transportation. we just have a 'people mover' that goes around in a circle in a few square miles. but still the only thing that would make me move out of michigan is the weather. i dont think i could move to boston, their accents are annoying as hell.

haha - most people in Boston are not from there. from what i saw it's 50% students, especially in Cambridge, which is accross the river from Boston, like 1/2 hour walk across the bridge or 5 min on the subway.

They're right, Boston is amazing. I think it's one of the most exciting cities in the country... the architecture and history is even more incredible then here in Detroit.
