the problem is they are open to the public. To me the free ones they should make the tickets available thru the programs the affiliates belong to or if you own a site you have to show proof. Now the pay ones all they give a fuck about is selling tickets.

Our industry has a low entry barrier; Nearly anyone can get into our industry in a matter of hours. At the same time our industry attracts people who want to get into it for the reason reasons - seeing naked women (or naked men). The end result is we have a lot of people showing up for such events that really aren't in the industry.

And then let's admit the truth - we throw some kick ass parties.

I see the day coming when when we start to form professional assocations where one cannot buy their way in. You'll have to be nominated, and then have a panel of people vote on entries.

I don't see webmaster convention changing soon. At the end of the day we attend such shows as a chance to sit down with a handful of people that we do business with on a daily or weekly basis but yet rarely get the chance to see.

I enjoyed Phoenix this year (free) and San Diego (paid) was also rockin!!

Out of the two it was easier for me to meet the people I wanted to meet at San Diego

I look at it like this - it?s too keeps relations and make?s new ones. ..
Without a face to face it?s hard to get people to talk to you, if you're a newbie.

I think they're a lot of fun, a good way to meet people you talk to on the boards or via email.. program owners, models, webmasters, you name it. A lot of the people I meet here at the shows I might not ever do business with, but you never know! Its also a good way to get advice from people who have been in the industry for a while.

I have never been to a webmaster show, but it sounds as if they are quite a lot different from trade shows I'm used to.

First because this is the second thread today to imply that business is/was done at them. That kinda surprises me, because if you have real business to do, why wait for a show to do it? Particularly since shows imply lots of distractions, lack of privacy, etc.

And I guess it had never really struck me that the public were there. I used to reluctantly go to auto, publishing and alcohol-related shows and they always had a day or two that were press and trade only, before opening to the public. You didn't pay to attend on those days (they were invite only) and obviously they were less of a mad house, so at least you could get some serious socializing done.

The first show that we went to, was our last.

The forums, have great topics, and nothing gets discussed, and nothing gets accomplished.

The people that you meet at the shows are usually stoned out of thier skulls, or Piss drunk, and can not remember you from on day to the next. Everyone passes out cards, saying call me, Lets make some deals, and then they stumble off to the next person.

Being a business owner and attending conventions for my mainstream as well adult ventures I make it a point to understand what is it that I am looking to get out of show and here are some key points I use:

1. Do I have set appointments to meet with specific people BEFORE I head out to a show?

2. Do I have a list of people's contacts that I would LIKE to meet up with, but cant nail down a schedule yet to meet up at the show for whatever reason.

3. Do I have a list of people that I'd like to make it a point to seek out while there and see if I can get a few minutes of face time once there?

4. What companines / people am I making it a point to check out their booth / seek out reps to start a business conversation.

These points allow me to fill my planner with set meetings, some open times to have impromtu meetings and also, meet new contacts. RARELY is there empty time just doing nothing at all ....

Sales reps / company reps should have at least 3 set appointments a day at a show + time to take at least 3 more unplanned appointments over a 12-16 hour day at a show. Anything less is a waste of your time.

If you fail to prepare then you are prepared to fail.

all good points, and all some that i have been doing as wwell.

however it seems after EVERY show someone is complaining about the amount of worthless leechers in attendance ( and this is not always the newbieZ)

I value newbies very much and I believe they are what will make this industry grow and become more accepted as time goes on.

( get us a way from the old scams of yesteryear that has hurt our business very much)

But I am not really seeing many newbies in attendance and I do not think THEY are the problem.

I feel there are way too many shows right now, (biting the hand that feeds me ;) Check out the new issue of The FUBAR Times, where we have an article covering that very subject. Watch a weeding out process next year, the average webmaster cant afford to go to all the shows, it just doesnt pay.Having said that, the Summer XBiz Show was by all accounts was an overwhelming success. Watch for it to really go over the top next year, book early

That's another interesting comment from the point of view of a non-show goer in respect of this industry, because I doubt that most trade shows in other industries even expect the "average" participant in their businesses to attend.

Adult shows, with the girls and parties, will pull in a lot more visitors than stands of books or even the latest cars, but by increasing attendance, you do not change the makeup of the industry itself: webmasters running small and medium operations will still be the vast majority. The first dozen shows set the pace. It's fine if ya want another trip to Vegas to escape work for a while, or to meet up with some folks.

Never been to a show in years now - it's a repetition of previous shows - time and again. How many repeats ya want to watch?

If there was a show which had actual substance at a business level and no bullshit - sure, would certainly think of attending.

The best contacts - and now longstanding friends from trade shows, were made away from the drunk idiots, bullshitters and models (eyecandy tho they may be)

It may also be a clue to change the term from "shows" to "conferences" and have these in more interesting locations.

Bottom line... unless it's business - it has little interest. Booze, big tits and less bullshit I can find 20 mins away and no need to travel to Vegas.

Two problems in my opinion. First most are easy to get into, even if you are not part of the industry in any real capacity.

2nd there are now far far to many shows in my opinion, so it dilutes the attendees. It used to be with the 2 internext shows you would know everyone who was anyone would be there. Now with so many shows you get everyone going to some and not others so you never get the full impact of the earlier shows.

To me the free ones they should make the tickets available thru the programs the affiliates belong to or if you own a site you have to show proof. Now the pay ones all they give a fuck about is selling tickets.

Being a business owner and attending conventions for my mainstream as well adult ventures I make it a point to understand what is it that I am looking to get out of show and here are some key points I use: 1. Do I have set appointments to meet with specific people BEFORE I head out to a show? 2. Do I have a list of people's contacts that I would LIKE to meet up with, but cant nail down a schedule yet to meet up at the show for whatever reason. 3. Do I have a list of people that I'd like to make it a point to seek out while there and see if I can get a few minutes of face time once there? 4. What companines / people am I making it a point to check out their booth / seek out reps to start a business conversation. These points allow me to fill my planner with set meetings, some open times to have impromtu meetings and also, meet new contacts. RARELY is there empty time just doing nothing at all .... Sales reps / company reps should have at least 3 set appointments a day at a show + time to take at least 3 more unplanned appointments over a 12-16 hour day at a show. Anything less is a waste of your time. If you fail to prepare then you are prepared to fail.

It's fine if ya want another trip to Vegas to escape work for a while, or to meet up with some folks. Never been to a show in years now - it's a repetition of previous shows - time and again. How many repeats ya want to watch? If there was a show which had actual substance at a business level and no bullshit - sure, would certainly think of attending. The best contacts - and now longstanding friends from trade shows, were made away from the drunk idiots, bullshitters and models (eyecandy tho they may be) It may also be a clue to change the term from "shows" to "conferences" and have these in more interesting locations. Bottom line... unless it's business - it has little interest. First most are easy to get into, even if you are not part of the industry in any real capacity. 2nd there are now far far to many shows in my opinion, so it dilutes the attendees. It used to be with the 2 internext shows you would know everyone who was anyone would be there.
