Pornography is now globally worth $57 billion

Pornography is now globally worth $57 billion, with the United States - porn's spiritual home - accounting for $12 billion (by comparison, Hollywood is worth a mere $10 billion). In the United States, a conservative estimate of new pornographic movie production is 50 new movies a day, and more than 500 million porno films are rented every year.

Gotta love that... porn is a bigger money maker than Hollywood!

$11,400,000,000 is all you'd need to be happy? I'd never settle for that tiny amount.

How many noticed that article attributes less than 2% of the total to online porn? That's not a whole lot of market share to show for 10 years access to a global audience. I have no idea whether stats of this kind are remotely accurate, but similar reports have pegged us at that level for the past 3-4 years.

For some reason $10 billion per year seems way too small for Hollywood.

I'm guessing that they are only refering to rentals... comparing the two rental industries.

But, I have no idea where people get their numbers for most things most of the time.

In comparison to many other industries, no... but when most people think about what the porn industry would be generating, they don't guess that high.

Of course, we have no way to know if these guesstimates bear any relation to reality. The last similar article I caught was one reprinted by XBiz (I have forgotten the original source) six months or so back. It put a similar ballpark figure on the whole of adult entertainment, including things such as escort services. That's a very different picture and which, if either, has it right?

The only thing both agreed about, along with other reports in recent years, is that online porn is a very poor relation and failing to expand its market share. Unless they are all wrong, that should be a cause for concern, rather than the general air of celebration reflected by most posts in this thread.

If it weren't for porn VCRs would probably never have broken out of the high-end geek toy market
