The wounding by Israeli troops of an Australian taking part in a peace demonstration was a graphic warning to keep clear of war zones, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

The woman, who identified herself to Channel Nine as Kate Edwards, 26, from Brisbane, was hit by shrapnel when Israeli troops fired on a West Bank protest in the township of Beit Jala.

Named by another news outlet as Kate Irving, the woman said she was one of six foreigners from the peace group Solidarity International hit when they approached an Israeli armoured personnel carrier while taking part in the demonstration.

Mr Downer refused to say if he would lodge an official complaint with Israel over the use of live ammunition on peaceful demonstrators.

"I wouldn't condone it, but unfortunately this woman has been injured, I don't think directly with a bullet, but as a result of shrapnel wounds. She's been treated and I hope that she'll get well soon," he told ABC radio.

"I do think when peace demonstrations go into war zones they take enormous risks, and the situation is perfectly clear that first of all in and around Ramallah, that is very clearly a war zone."

Mr Downer said his department had issued clear consular advice to Australians warning them against travel to the West Bank.

"The situation here is that people should not be mounting protests in war zones," he said. "There are enormous risks involved in doing that.

"In this particular case I am concerned that an Australian has been injured and obviously the Israeli authorities are aware of that and aware of our concerns."

He said the protesters were lucky not to have been killed.
