Miers is a fake nominee
Bow down to the manipulative glory of Karl Rove.
The scenario works out like this. Bush and the Republicans want a Conservative judicial appointment but don't have the juice to push someone with anti-Roe v. Wade credentials through after the Katrina debacle. So... Rove does the following: nominate a trusted political friend to serve as a placeholder - someone willing to take one for the team. Rove hopes that both Democrats and some Republicans will oppose Miers because of her lack of experience. Rove is hoping the Democrats generate enough fuss, especially a filibuster! Yes, Rove wants a filibuster. He wants to use up the one "get-out-of-jail" card the American public will tolerate. At this point Miers will withdraw her nomination on her own freeing Bush to name a qualified Conservative like Luftig to the bench. Rove hopes that the Democrats won't have the momentum to filibuster a second nominee by accusing the Democrats of obstructionism. Add a well orchestrated PR campaign about how Roberts was qualified, how the Dems got their filibuster on the Miers, and other assorted tricks... voila. Rove wins. Too much energy is being spent on Miers the past 24 hours. Rove is hanging her out to dry on purpose.

There is one problem with your logic: No filibuster will be needed, because it is likely that the republicans in the senate will ALSO vote against her.
THe current "don't comment on things you might pass judgement on later" logic means that you would have someone with no past record, nothing to show how they generally operate as a judge, and someone who (horrors!) might have donated money to both a anti-abortion group AND the democratic party in the past. She isn't conservative enough for the republicans, and not liberal enough for the democrats. She will get the down on the "up and down" vote, and Rove will be a big loser (if this was his plan). Meirs is toast - just a question of when. Alex |

Giorgio,
Interesting analysis! Yes, it's very possible that she could just be a pawn to weaken the Dem's defenses and soften them up for the "real" candidate. It will be worth watching to see how this plays out.
