whats the deal with leather couches - am I fucked if I buy one?
I need to furnish the great room/main area of my house and La-z-boy has a deal on some nice leather couches. Itis a local deal, not a national sale. I'll see if I can find them online, but either way:
are leather couches hard to maintain? does the leather scratch easily? how long will they last? etc etc |

If you answer yes to any of the following questions do not get one.
Do you own cats? Do you prefere to be shirtless or pantless in the summer? Do you have kids or have kids visiting? Do you have dogs that like couches? Do you plan on getting cats?

i have soft leather couches and love them.. got 2 dogs too who love the couches and no, they never damaged the couches. if you cut the nails on your dogs often enough (every 3 or 4 months when you get them groomed) you don't need to worry but if you get a cat you must declaw it. if you are shirtless or pantless leather won't stick to your skin so long you are not sweaty so if you have an AC you don't have to worry about that either. leather couches are easier to maintain too just use the conditioner once in a while

Leather all the way. I have Leather in the room I spend most time in. My den has fabric sofas. I prefer leather 10 to 1 over cloth.
My two dogs haven't done a bit of damage to the leather, you can have leather furniture forever if you take care of it. |

Leather couches and chairs/lazyboys rock! I have a pit that sleeps on the couch and she hasn't harmed it yet.

If you have dogs, get something with a bit of grain to it to hide any scratches. I bought one of the shiny bicast leather ones which are supposed to be really tough, but their nails do enough damage to make little dull scratch marks where the leather doesn't have that gloss to it. They're not exactly scratching it, but it is noticeable.
Winter or summer A/C means sitting on the couch isn't cozy, so buy a few nice blankets to keep close. Even with a couple of negatives, I still love leather simply because you can just take a soft cloth & wipe the whole thing down. Spills, dog hair - no problem. |
