Yesterday evening was the first annual Weg Cory BBQ. Chicken, Steaks, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Coronas and Wine were served to a total turnout of 5 people (Phil, Tonda, Gabe, our designer).

Some highlights included my girlfriend deciding to come home early from her vacation only to find me 10 sheets to the wind. Also, food was great, I prepped, Gabe cooked.

Here is a little pictorial of the events.

The depth of my sophistication knows no bounds. It is always important to match the food and dvd ambience with the wine. Few people understand the value this adds to your get together. Once again, I raise the bar.

Chopper was very well behaved at the table. He even minimized his snoring when he fell asleep in Tonda's lap.

But away from the table, Chopper set the mark early on that he would get in some good leg-humping time.

A little later, Gabe paid back Chopper with a dose of his own humping medicine.

Coppola wine with Apocalypse now on the TV...sweet.

I've been to Niebaum-Coppola winery a few times. Excellent little museum (an actual Tucker auto and costumes from various movies, such as Bram Stoker's Dracula). Nice wine tour as well. Coppola himself hangs out there smoking cigars outside under the trees when he is in town.

Nothing like summer in California...

The Niebaum-Coppola winery is right in the heart of the Napa Valley, approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive from San Francisco depending upon the traffic.

The best way to enjoy Napa is to stay overnight at one of the many bed and breakfast houses, and then to wine taste the day away. Of the B&B's in Napa that I have stayed at, I most enoyed La Belle Epoque. Hennessey House was also good (I stayed in a newer building with a huge jacuzzi).

Napa has some excellent restaurants in addition to the wineries. Here are some recommended restaurants:

Auberge du Soleil (highly recommended for lunch, overlooks the whole Valley)
Culinary Institue of America (Excellent Chef's school, take a class or enjoy an inexpensive meal - also a great place to purchase gourmet cooking supplies)
Cole's Chop House (if you love steak, this is the place)
The French Laundry (must have reservations - month plus in advance)
Terra (my favorite Napa restaurant, actually in St Helena, creative menu)
Tra Vigne (bon appetit)

If you are adventuorous (and can get up early), several companies offer early morning hot air balloon trips over the valley.

Wineries I would recommend include:

Beaulieu Vineyards (always decent Cabs and Chardonnay)
Beringer Vineyards (good red wines including Zinfandel)
Clos Pegase (excellent Chardonnay and wonderful art collection)
Freemark Abbey (good Cabs and some excellent Chardonnay)
Hess Collection Winery (nice art museum also)
Mondavi Vineyards (familiar wine to most I'm sure)
Opus One (pricey, but the best Cabernet)
Sterling Vineyards (ride a tram to this mountain top winery, great Cabs)
Stag's Leap (excellent Cabernet)
ZD Wines (great Chardonnay)

There are many other great wineries, but the ones above have nice locations and good tours in addition to wine tasting.

Nearby Sonoma also has some great wineries (Kenwood, Chateau St Jean, St. Francis to name a few), although they are mostlynoted for their Chardonnay.

If you do a Google search for any of the aforementioned places you can get more info.

I also highly recommend the Wine Country Living web site.
