GIMP, is it comparable to Photoshop?

What do you think?

Nope, it's not even close. It works OK in a pinch but if you aren't on a Linux machine where Photoshop isn't an option, I wouldn't even consider gimp.

Gimp is a nice program. It has a lot of the features that photoshop has.. I think it can be compared to an older version of photoshop. Maybe a photoshop 4 or 5.

Most of the stuff I do can be done just as well in gimp as in photoshop, but then I am not a gfx artist.

gimp is no photoshop but it is better than nothing and gimp is free. if you do decide to go with gimp you will need to download and install GTK+ Runtime Environment to make it work.
you can get GTK+ Runtime Environment at the site where you download gimp.
if not hit google and you'll find it.

Only idiots do. I cant think of 1 advantage for a webmaster to prefer linux other then trying to be a smartass.

Dunno.. I am a bit of a smartass, but I have debian on one of my laptops. I use it to test my code in an enviroment that is as close as possible to the servers I use and I actually do quite a bit of code work on that machine.

I can think of a few:
1 - it's free
2 - less prone to spyware/malware/viruses
3 - hate Micro$oft monopoly

Photoshop CS2 = Microsoft Word
GIMP = Notepad

linux is better for a server rather than a workstation. GIMP can be a good tool, but it isnt by anymeans a photoshop.

Good luck though dude

So is soup at the homeless center.

2 - less prone to spyware/malware/viruses
Less prone to software in general unless you like to fuck around for hours
to accomplish the most simple tasks.

95% of your customers think different and you should be 100% compatible with them.

3 I agree with, but if he's going based on the graphics the software produces, a jpg is a jpg, so its not too bad.

I use linux as my primary desktop, all I work on is automated/ scripting stuff so it totally makes sense. I can run still run a full version of windows under a virtual machine for when I have to test pages. Linux is great for desktop if you're a techie, and depending on what part of the industry you're in... very fast and robust, greater security, and especially no spyware or file system hassles... for automation there is just no comparison.

Having said that the gimp sucks, don't bother if you want to do real graphics work.

GIMP is nice for a lazy sunday afternoon of goofing around.
Photoshop is all about gett'n down to bussiness.

GIMP is sort of like PaintShopPro, something for the hobbiest and newbs. Photoshop is for the professional and expirienced.

Plus no other program will optimize, render or handle images the way PS does it, it works with your OS to give you the best results insted of beating the shit out of it like other programs do.

In the end, it's all about what kind of work you're doing.

To go to strip clubs and get lap dances from strippers, I need tools to make sites to make money

GIMP is easier to use with the right pluggins, and there are lots of them to play with....

I use Photoshop with Linux via crossover office. GIMP is OK, but I don't really care for it. I've only used Linux for the past 3 years or so, and there is no need to fuck around for hours to get a program to work unless you don't know what you are doing.

Windows is a nice operating system but I don't care to run three programs all the time just to make sure I don't get a virus or some spyware crap. Maybe the next Windows will fix this, but I doubt I will try it unless something amazing comes out of it.

For anyone who wants to try Linux I suggest www.ubuntulinux.org -its free, and the support is excellent.

gimp is fine for most web work while photoshop fucking rocks, gimp is free, photoshop is not.

one benefit running linux over windows is that linux doesnt get clogged up with useless services, processes and other non essential crap that eventually turns your machine into a pile of shit.

most graphic web artists using photoshop use only a small % of it's features.. never actually using it to it's full potential because they have no need to.

In my case I'm only interested in making titles for feeders and banners with either softwares.
