Get a cat or kitten from a rescue shelter and save it from being killed. As far as training a cat they are untrainable. Cats do what they want when they want. Get a female over a male as males tend to pee everywhere to mark their turf. As far a litter box training they pretty much figure that out themselves. If you see your cat is about to pee or poop just put it in the litter box.

Cats

Yes get the cat from the pound, kitties are available and they are usually weaned but still the cute little mini cats they can be. as far as training cats its easy. when they do something wrong, pick them up look at them in the face and say NO, firmly. When they ignore you, shoot em with a water gun. I want my cats life, they are chillin all the time. eat good, sleep a lot, etc, but you gotta handle em. Here is me showin the socky princess who is boss, and her rebelling.

Most little babies are taught how to use a litter box by their moms.
It's instict to want to scratch in loose material. Just make sure you offer a smaller place when they are tiny, and then upgrade to the largest box you can find when they are larger. They like to have room to move around.

Definately go with one from a shelter, as these are the ones in most need of a home.
Expect to have to jump through some hoops to bring a kitty home. Line up references they can call to verify you'll be a good pet owner before you head out. Most shelters are very selective about who they let take an animal, because they don't want it back in 3 months. ;)

Don't leave the cat and the baby alone. They should be fine together, but accidents do happen (babies like to pull and bite tails). Never let it sleep in the crib or on/near the baby. Good luck!

what would you train a cat to do?
they are real simple - give them food, fresh water, and a litter box - then watch them sleep all over the house, everyday - damn near all the time

make sure you get your cat fixed/spayed/neutered - whatever - or you'll wind up making the stray cat population even worse than it is.

I also agree - no need to buy a cat, saving one from the local pound is much better way to go.

actually, once the male is fixed that isn't a problem - and fixed males are more affectionate than females :-)

Well, i'll go in a different direction than the "get it from the pound" posts..
I'd say get it from a respected breader, You'll know what you get, what the temper will be, It will most likely be house broken when you get it and you can pick a breed that is good with kids.. Like with everything else, you get what you pay for !

One breed i can higly recomend is the Maine Coon..
Here's a pic of my own little 28 pound 'baby'

I would recommend Siamese, and a female.

A lot of people do not like them but those are all I've ever owned (Seal point, chocolate point, and a few others). I'd agree with the male cat stereotypes listed above. They are a bit more aggresive, willing to piss all over your house, tear up your shit, and alike.

You can train a cat to do simple things if you spend the time, but they are not, nor will do it like dogs. They are not quick learners, that's for sure.

when a cat is a kitten they're gonna be a little crazy. the trick is to get a water bottle and squirt them when they do something bad or go on your counter places you dont want them.

Kittens should have a cat house with a cat scratching pole. And the best place to get a cat is the pound. I have a siamese that I paid $400 for and my other one they found the trash on crack alley. The siamese is a moody bitch the other one loves everyone.

my cats were super easy to train, just showed them litter box and they figured it out, they totally ignore my newborn, sometimes will sniff near him and then they get scared and run away, they are both declawed and neutered, might make a difference.

If you have a new born baby its actually dangerous to have a cat in the house...They tend to sit on top of people's stomach and if your not careful it might sit on your baby and suffocate it.

Save a kitty from the pound!! Most of the time, they're already litter trained, and then it's all a metter of getting to know each other and having a squirt bottle around. Doesn't take long.

I found & saved my cats from a certain early death 5 years ago. They were orphaned kittens. They were all ate up with fleas and worms. They did not have a bright future. Now they are big fat happy cats. (17 & 20 lbs each)

Here is a brief skip through their life:

Little Cats

Medium Cats

Big Cats

Looks like that first one has Turkish Van in it.. Would it by any chance be crazy about water ?

Breed Turkish Van's years back, and if you're looking for a cat that's extremely intelligent and with loads of personality then that's deffenetly a good choise of cats.. Just remember to cover your fish tanks, close the toilet seat, and seal anything else with water if you don't want it swimming in it *lol*

I have a Bengal cat and she is awesome!!! But you have a little patience with them becuase they tend to be a bit wild as comapared to other cats, especially when their young.

I don't want to read this whole thread, I read some of it so if I repeat somebody sorry about that. Cats do best when trained with squirt bottles when kittens. Make sure they don't see you directly spray them, if they scratch on a couch or get on the table do this, while your not at home, leave the squirt bottle on the table or in a problem area, they will leave it alone. I trained my cats like this and for the most part they are good, no table jumping, no couch scratching and so on. Usually saying no when kittens works too but sometimes they don't listen.

Get a kitten or a cat from a shelter, thats the best way to go, I prefer male cats, they are more cuddly and have less of an attitude, but you must get them neutered. Litter box training is simple, they usually go right to it.

Good luck! I am glad that most people haven't experienced problems with newborns, I am always afriad when I have kids I will have to get rid of the cats

Very interesting and it's so ironic that you say that. Ricky (more orange) & Lucy (more white) both are crazy about water. They are always playing in their water bowl and with their paws and flicking them all over the place. They are brother and sister (i assume as i found them together) but the male (Ricky) has different features. Fur even feels different. Lucy has much softer and thicker fur. Like thick rabit fur. They both are crazy about water though that's for sure.

don't let the baby around the kitty litter or anywhere near that stuff! If you get a cat, I recommend declawing them (just the front ones) this will save you from worrying when they play with your kids and also your furniture.. Make sure you keep them in the house.

Some people say that is evil and wrong, but why do they need claws if they are indoor cats?

But beware --- Dog owners are masters..... Cat owners are servants.. trust me. I know!

well i've been doing searches on cats, and i found one that will fit my lifestyle, and thanks to Fedfest's recomendation, I decided on getting a Maine Coon cat...heres what i read from a website about them:

Maine Coons are relaxed and easy-going, remain playful throughout their lives, get along well with kids and dogs & other cats, will play "fetch" with their owners, they do not constantly pester you for attention, but prefer to "hang out" with their owners, will follow you from room to room and wait outside a closed door for you to emerge, will stay close by, probably occupying the chair next to yours instead.

Hehe.. I bet they are huge personalities aswell with a good twist of crazy behavior (in the good sence).. Try giving them a water bowl with a guppy or a small gold fish to play with and you'll have them entertained for hours.. I used to give mine a bowl outsite on summer days and everytime the fish got outside the bowl the cat would pick it up from the ground and put it back in the bowl.. Same cat would pet a mouse and think it was ohh so sweet *lol*

Only "problem" with them was that they didn't like "Normal" cats, (and they like to tease dogs) and will never give up in a fight.. our male would kick the shit out of any stray cats comming onto our ground, beat up 4 males at once at a time so bad that we had to have 2 of them put to sleep.. took like 5 secs and he didn't get a single scratch himself..
