Cats have lots of personality and they're moody. They like their owners, but they can never be loyal to them. That's why I'm a dog person.

Tala 05-17-2005 03:26 PM

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

:thumbsup

That description is actually very acurate, In behavior they really are often more like a dog that a cat (With a twist of Garfield though) If you don't ansver they don't talk, but if you do ansver you can keep up a conversation with them for hours.. And you'll be surprised at how much they seem to understand what you're saying *lol*
It's right on with the "hang out" remark aswell, and unlike some breeds they are pretty much allways in the mood for cuddeling when you are, and not only when they are..
Playing Fetch is something my pink Coon actually insists upon, he will find a hairband or some toy the kids left and then come to me carrying it in his mouth asking me to throw it, then come back with it for me to throw it once more, then come back with it.. Etc..Etc..Etc..

Do look carefully in the pedigrees though when you get one, some lines have been breed with siamese and some with persians, and allthough these are great cats too, it gives those lines a different look and different behavior..
Some breeders you might wan't to look up (or look for pedigrees with those names in them) are :
MtKittery, Hillside, Willowplace, Maineline, Kiskata.. Those are all american breeders that i know have great lines.. I especially like the Mtkittery cats though i'm not sure she's breeding anymore.
If you find one and wan't me to have a look at the pedigree for you feel free to contact me and i'll be glad to..

Ohh, and then I'd deffenetly take a male, just be sure to nuter him if you don't plan to breed on him (same if you take a female, unnutered females actually mark their surroundings just as much as males)

That's kind of like saying that dogs bite and allways bark...

Really depends a lot on the breed, and the owner :)

Guess I'm a cats and dog person, was vissiting a Mastiff breeder yesterday and got on their waitinglist for a puppy in their next litter :)

To be honest, I don't like him that much.. first of all because he has white, witch is not a natural collor (comes from breeding in persians) and the fact that they had to shave him just shows this more, a Maine Coon fur normaly would need no or very little grooming, but once mixed with Persians they get high maintenance and in bad cases you can expect to need to shave him like that often..
He's propably a sweet cat and all, but to me he's more Persian Coon than maine coon.. Sorry to say.

Yes exactly, That cat could propably have a pedigree, or at least you could find a pedigree cat looking much like him, and they would offcouse be Maine Coon cats.. Only you couldn't expect their behavior to be like the description you posted earlier about the Main Coon but would only get a cat that pretty much looked like a Maine Coon..

Hehe, allmost knew i'd get myself into truble with the remark about the white, this is something that takes quite a long explenation but the short version is that when you see a Maine Coon with white there is allmost certainly another cat involved, since the gene for white is not natural to the breed..
However this is not allways a bad thing, croosbreeding with another race is actually often good for the breed as it can strongen it in many ways if done right.. But can allso give unwanted carataristics if done wrong..
Changing the furs resistance against water and cold, and it's ability to straighten out without a comb is an example where it has gone wrong..

Lets say you have 10 generations of Main Coon, then breed 1 time with a white persian and then breed 10 more generations of maine coon on top of that.. that will water out the persian part to pretty much zero, since the behavior and other caractaristics are too dominant on the Maine Coon part for that to have any role..
except for one thing, the white collor since the gene for white is dominant
So you do the same with another line.. 10 generations, 1 white persian, 10 generations.. and then you have 2 cat's with genes for white.. they will allways make x% of kittens with white.. but no persians.. And that's the right way to do it..

Then somebody takes a shortcut, breeds a Maine Coon to a white Persian, and then breeds the offspring of that to another white persian(or even the same actually), or breede cats from that same litter to each other.. and that's where it goes wrong as the Persian part is now too strong and allmost imposible to "water out" especially since some of those lines have then later been breed to simular lines..

Hope that made a bit of sence even with my shitty english *lol* but what you basicly have to look out for is Maine Coons with small chins/jaws (Lover jaw should be massive instead of weak), ears should be big and pointing up, not be sitting on each side of the head (Though they still can do on old males), fur should be slightly oily(not greasy) and be seperated not filtered, and paws should be huge, not slim or tiny..A 3 month kitten for example shall be pretty much all Ears, legs and paws (Yes they grow like a dog too)

Damn that post just got way too long :1orglaugh

Well obeying is something different as being loyal. A cat is loyal to his boss too, yet he/she does not obey him/her :winkwink:

Google shows 205,000,000 for cat and 18,400,000 for porn..

Here's my Maine Coon (female). She was shaved a month or so ago. Great personality, but very high maintinence. She dominates the litter box. She just stands in it sometimes. It's rather gross, her nickname is Shitty Kitty for this reason.

She loves to cuddle and does not leave my side at all. Also get's very jealous when my gf comes near me. She is very curious and destructive, it's like having a child in the house. I can't have anything nice b/c she ruins everything from couches,my big screen tv, and ripped up my berber carpet. This little fucker costs me a lot of money, but in the longrun I guess she's worth it.

I picked her up at the animal shelter. I was looking for a really wild and rambunctious cat and I sure got one. Apparently she was dropped off by her owner at the Humane Society b/c of slight imperfections. I guess the lady would breed them for show.

I shave her b/c she get's furballs and she seems like a happier cat when shaven. If you do not brush the cat very often the fur will get matted. She does have a problem with shit sticking to her fur :1orglaugh It's rather gross. That's why I mentioned she's high maintinence.
