Too much blood has been spilled in the name of God over the ages that I am amazed that people buy into the zealots out there. From suicide bombers believing they will get martyrdom to George Bush saying God's gift to people was democracy and its the US right to spread it to other countries, we have learned no lessons from our past about how poisionous religion is.

Religion was created in a time when people still thought the earth was flat. That pretty much sums up the logical reasoning of the time period and why so many people that have half a brain look at religion and scratch their head realizing its a bunch of bs to in actuality control masses of people with fear and prophecy.

My mother is religious and it drives me batty. One time when she was visiting I went with her to mass since I hadn't been for so many years and I couldn't control myself and just started laughing when the priest started the usual gospel part talking about some events from 2000 years ago with the corinthians and the zacharians or whatever the fuck it was.

I had to walk out of the service and waited outside. My mother got upset, but I jammed her and said you tell me what one thing means that he talked about with all this nonsense from 2000 years ago and she couldn't.

100% right! I'm sure religion will outlive us all though (aside from being the demise and end of us all.)

Here's my theory (and an over simplified generalization):

Religious people are weak and need to hand off all personal responsibility and decisions on a moral code to live by to a religion so they don't have to deal with these most important things they should have been pondering and deciding for themselves.

After reading Dostoyevsky's THe Grand Inquisitor, I realised people are indeed sheep and are afraid to be without crutches and warm and fuzzy certanties like religion provides them rather than taking it on themselves to figure it all out.

Country music is like a religious cult:

You have to wear the cult dress code in their club.

You have to learn the ritual dance.

Its another version of religion that attracts weak people that need the reassurance a cult gives them where all individual decisions have been made for them and they don't have to take individual reponsibility. You don't just enjoy the music and make up your attire and dance step, you learn the cult way so you can belong.

You just described most of the human race. From school to the grave, the vast majority of us are terrified of being individual, different, not belonging to some group or other.

And if you think about it, since we are designed to be communal creatures, how could our genes allow us to be any other way? It would be a contradiction in terms.

Beyond providing a group to which people can belong, religion also provides some with a focal point for the wish to believe that this life is not all there is. It has also been, still is, a useful tool for those in search of wealth and power.

What's not to believe?
  • Mary was a virgin
  • Jesus raised the dead and cured the blind
  • Oceans part
  • Rivers turn to blood
  • If it rains for 40 days the Earth floods

Besides, religion attracts nice honest ppl...

Bunch of idiots on GFY. 'Religion attracts nice people' - well actually in many instances it does. If you actually knew the amount of people Christian charities help daily across the world (and even in your own nation - i.e. the homeless) you might actually realise. But I guess, considering 90% of you never get out of the house, you live in your own delusional world which is ruled by FOX or BBC (depending on which way you swing). You see a child abuse case in the Catholic Church (an obvious problem no doubt) and you believe all Catholics are possessed with this urge to fuck children.

The truth of the matter is that the majority of the world swings to one religious orientation or another, and while religion has been used in the name of bad things, the vast majority of these people are good, honorable people. They help the starving in developing nations, they help the starving in your own, and they do it not for money but for satisfaction of helping another human being. Just because you idealise money and things only, does not give you a reason to bash those that idealise a God.

I don't attend Church dickhead, nor am I religious (other than believing that there may well be a God). However, I know plenty of religious people and organisations that do great work. Idiots like you are just too stupid to realise it.

So we are the one who live in a "delusional world which is
ruled by FOX or BBC" and you don't attend church but you
know where and who donates to charities...do you see the
transparency you portray in yourself.

On a scale of one to ten - fuck off.

You live in a delusional world ruled by mass media. American's (and many other Western nations mind you) are filled with idiots who jump on any and every trend that pops up in the mass media. If you actually took the time to read some various sources and learn a bit more about the world you live in (that is other than learning about terrorists and child abusers) you would actually realise how idiotic your intial post was.

Unfortunately, we haven't evolved that far yet. Most people still need religion.

Humans are easily influenced, highly impressionable, and have a strong desire to believe that our existence in this universe has a purpose. Given these qualities, it's understandable why religions are as popular as they are.

Who said anything about America not being a powerful nation? Hell, I like most Americans but I was stating an obvious fact. Just look at this board when Britney Spears hits the news because she likes to touch herself. A bunch of:

Relgion has been the root cause of more destruction, violence, and death than any other element in the history of mankind.

Give me a fucking break with this religion does good things baloney. You'd still have charitable people without religion behind it. Nothing would change there so your argument has no merit.

The Vatican is one of the most corrupt institutions in the world. They've been sucking money out of poor 3rd world catholics for 2000 years. Go look at the wealth they've amassed over there sometimes.

Religion impeds Science, and for that all the religionists need to be sent off somewhere far away to live like in the dark ages .. as they still would be if smarter people didn't fight and sacrifice for progress.

Despite the hundreds of millions who have been murdered in the name of religion, that tradgedy does not compare to the inconceivable cost of slowing our intellectual and technological evolution.

This definition is a large umbrella.

4. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

Yup, over generalizing for the main religions, perhaps one should consider the smaller independent ones, who differ greatly in the regimentation and passing off of responsibilities.

So coz the Vatican is corrupt all religion is evil???

you're right, we have to put an end to religion...

Christianity is a way of life! Not a religion

and stop generalizing all beliefs!

If you don't want to have anything to do with it leave it alone... I don't attack you coz you do not believe so why should you attack anyone that DOES believe?

In fact believers are not "weak" people... we are people who dare to admit we have no control over anything in life... we dare to admit we cannot decide what will happen and what will not!

Don't give me that shit "not taking the consequences" "giving everything out of hand" coz I do take responsibility for all my actions... I do not think I can pull off any shit without consequences!

If you do not believe that is your choice, starting this discussion over and over is not going to get you anywhere coz everyone has his/her own opinion which is almost impossible to change.

If you ARE willing to discuss this with an open mind (as I always am) you can contact me whenever you want.

So... I'm done... carry on

I see some mixed signals. On one hand people say it hurts scientific discovery, and on the other hand these are the same people that would rather sink money into deadbeats, and slash the nasa and military budget.

I don't believe in religion, and think it is a crock to control people.

But on the other hand the opposite extreme probably isn't good either. People that give into decadence and vices, and don't do an ounce of good with their life.

See this is the whole point here, you have no idea what you support.
You babble on about righteousness and in the meantime you have no
idea what your leaders do and support.
  • War involvement - Vatican openly supports Palestine and condemns Israel
  • Shelters war criminals - money, gold, land, factories, and other loot
stolen by the Ustashe and Nazis.
This is "your" lifetime. Now shuddap and toss some more into the collection
plate so they can pay for the bodyguards and limos they drive the Ustashe
and Nazis around in.

every country on the planet but the US condems israel.

anyway. i don't buy into religion. I'm a decent person. I genuinly care about my friends. I love my girlfriend and I try and live the best and happiest life I can. If I go to "hell", so be it, I don't want to base my existence on worshipping someone or something and I sure as fuck don't want to base my eternity on that either.

And since God is all knowing...he knew I'd feel this way long before my creation.

besides, how can I have free will, if God knows everything? that denotes destiny and fate...not free will.
