The Adultgods script might be free. A friend of mine made it, and he mentioned giving it out either free or at a low cost. I don't know the current situation, but I can find out for you when he comes online if you like the script.

We've used it on a few mainstream projects and currently just launched a set of boards for our affiliates, take a look at it HERE and you'll se just what PHPBB looks like and the features that it has. The admin section couldn't get much better either! Free & PHP Should be just what ya need. -Loki-

I've been messing with Zorum (php) a little bit. Similar look to vBulletin.. free, simple to set up.

why don't you go for the best, which, btw, it's free? Just grab a copy of YaBB, install it in 5 minutes and be happy, it's way better than any free or pay BBS
