He stole an idea and muscled his way into a position of control. That control grew over time and made him rich. He's not dumb, stupid, gay, or "lucky". He's a fucking dangerously intelligent man.

The deciding factor was Gates recognizing the race he was in. Jobs was too delusional with his grandiose ideas of blah blah blah to realize control of one of the planets hugest new markets was fast slipping away.

Im pretty sure he ported the BASIC programming langugage to fit on a 4KB Rom. I wouldnt say call that stupid :o/ . Microsoft on the other hand is another issue.
