clueless affiliate program support

I asked this question to many affiliate program employees/owners lately:

Say I want to join your affiliate program and promote your stuff. I'd be starting from scratch and would want to earn $2k+ per month. What would you say is the best way to do this?

I got 1 response that was any type of answer to this question. 1. How sad is that? Many people said "ask on the boards" or "im not a webmaster"

No. I was asking a hypothetical question anyway. I would have wanted to start with nothing (not sending them any of my current traffic) and get up to $2k+ per month.

No it's not. It's a great question and one that program owners and affiliate support should be prepared to answer on a regular basis.

What is stupid about it? If an affiliate program cant tell you how to make money by using them, why use them?

its not a programs responsibility to hold anyones hand.... there are hundreds and hundreds of indepth articles, and tools and resources to learn it and figure it out. this game is for adults. not lazy slackers.

but, on the other hand.. a lending hand isnt to much to ask.

Lol. What does the question have to do with laziness? It asks for a method to make $2k+ a month, not the webmaster to come to your house and do the work for you. Its not their responsibility, but if they dont care about the affiliates then why should an affiliate promote them?

Judging by your answer, any affiliate program you own/work for would have lost an affiliate that wants to do $24k+ a year using your program. How smart is that?

i honestly dont see the similarity.. would I rather have 30 affiliates that know wtf they are doing, or 2 that are complete morons... why devote my valuable time to you when i can sit back and watch 30 doing it right?

lol.. pretty simple

Haha dumbass. A 30 second paragraph answering the question, or doing nothing and hoping the affiliates know what to do? Pure genius!

let me clarify my position a bit more..

loyal affiliates are few and far between. Why would i take the time to show 'you' the ropes and have you promoting another sponsor 2 months later? seems like a huge waste to me.

Heh because if you take the time as a sponsor to show someone how to make money with YOUR program, it wont work the same way with other affiliate programs. This person is asking you how to make $2k a month with YOUR program not in general.

However, on the generic side I would explain the two avenues open to you - our adult products and the products that do well in the mainstream. I would then take whatever time it takes to show you how to make and promote mainstream sites that convert.

On the adult side I would explain either TGP or AVS to you (and I have done this btw..do it all the time...taken new webmasters and taken the time to tell them what an avs is, how to build them, etc) and the ways we have found are best to use those to advertise our products within those medias.

As you said you are starting from scratch I wouldn't really go into promoting us via your own paysite but if you had one of those I would go down that route too.

It is also in the follow up care. I want all of our affiliates to know that they can contact me with any questions they have. If they need a banner or other advertising material we don't have they can just contact me and I will get it done for them. This just happened the other day with someone that was promoting our weight loss products on a wedding site and needed a banner that featured a bride.

I am not bothered about if someone's questions take five minutes to answer or two hours. If I help someone to earn money obviously it is going to help our company. Not just in the obvious way of them making money for us through those sales but if you help someone who is starting out usually that breads a slight sense of loyalty.

If you get the 'hey it isn't my job to hold your hand' attitude then why should you bother? Actually, I am affiliate support and yes, it is my job to hold your hand.

an affiliate program can provide you tools and materials to use in order to bring the $2k income per month, but they won't tell you how to do it. What answers would you like to hear?

"make galleries"
"make free sites"
"buy traffic"
"do picposts"
"get SE traffic"

?

I'm not looking for answers. I was testing the level of support offered You make money if they make money with you.

I can make a billion galleries and not make a dime. You have to submit them to TGP's and get listed You also can get them listed in search engines, I have galleries at #1 for certain keywords just on accident.

Nice post.

3400 isnt really much. Anyone would have a much higher percentage "active" webmasters if you give them a little help instead of telling them "its your job to send sales, its not my job to give you any help"

thats a good 2 weeks worth of learning/teaching...

and i DO think its safe to say that just about every program is promoted pretty damn similarly.. so what I teach you CAN be used to promote others..

but whatever, you seem like a complete smartass anyways, and you are the type of affiliate I would just delete his email and laugh.

Yeah, I know..I just didn't want to sound too cocky ;)

I know from personal experience that when someone takes the time to reach out it sticks with you. When I first started I was looking to trade links with people when I was trying half-assed to do a tgp (many moons ago) and Lisa Marie from Gopostal was the only person that replied to me. From those conversations we ended up working together reviewing her sites and JJJ for nearly four years. Even now we still work together with Thumblords. A little kindess bred a lot of loyalty.

I think it is also in the interest of the affiliate program owner to be as supportive as possible to affiliates that, with some help, could make you alot of money.

I help you - you help me?
