Anyone live in Tennessee?
A year ago I moved down to New Orleans and I am so ready to leave.
It's dirty and Louisiana is the Most Dangerous state to live in acording to http://www.morganquitno.com/cr02dang.htm in 2002. I really miss the mountains and Tennessee came to mind. Anyone know of any nice areas in Tennessee? |

East Tennessee seems pretty good to me. Near Smoky Mountains- mild climate, nice mountain scenery, low crime, etc.

If you want to be in a city take a look at Knoxville in TN or Asheville in North Carolina. I prefer a more rural setting near a tourist economy. Clean money - not much pollution.

Eric,
Oregon is also very nice. very liberal state as far as adult and stuff like that go. no sales tax, all green trees, etc. Lots of mountains around here, pretty hi tech, they call it the silicon forest. Intel, hp, etc. only thing is quite a bit of rain through the year, but the summers are nice.

Well Eric if you don't mind some rain, your good to go bro;)
most all of the portland and surrounding areas have broadband via Cable Modem (att, well know comcast) or DSL As I said, a very liberal state. Most strip bars in the country per capita in the portland area. checkout oregonlive.com, ran big the big newspaper in portland, for some ideas and stuff. no sales tax, but there is a state income tax.

I think you'd like Knoxville, Eric -- it's a college town for the most part -- the Vols are there -- and it's gorgeous in the spring and the fall -- I've not lived there but my cousin married a girl from K'ville and when we went up for the engagement party (fall) and the wedding (following spring) it was BEAUTIFUL. Just make sure you like the color orange lol ;)
Raleigh/Durham/Cary -- the Research Triangle Park area in central NC is also a great place to be in tech... mtns are a couple hours away but so is the ocean... |

That's right, Kimmy - I have relatives working high tech in Cary NC and its just a few hours to the coast (a bit farther to the mountains. Better opportunities for IT struff than Knoxville or Asheville.

Ditto KK's Knoxville and Raleigh/Durham recommendations. My sister's at UT and my brother's at Duke
I'm close to TN, but I'm in a rural area - I probably have one of the 3 computers in the county Clemson SC is a nice place. There are a few large companies around there and they have the mountains AND lakes. My son went to school there last year. Ashville's beautiful, too. College towns are good because the cost of living is usually low. Just be sure in this economy, especially in IT, that you get a job BEFORE you head out. Good luck!! |

Tennessee is pretty cool. I moved from Chicago down to the Memphis area 10 years ago, & I haven't regretted it once.
NO STATE TAX!!! My wife & I just had a new house built out in the suburbs. 5 bedrooms, 4 full baths, a playroom, & an office on a half acre lot - well under $300K! |

Now in Memphis but bought five acres in fayette county. If you dont like crime damn sure dont go to memphis. Anybody live in rural west tennessee? I am planning on building a house in the country after 20 years of high-rise living in Memphis.Gotta love still not having a state income tax.

Dude, seriously, stay out of TN. It sucks. Too damn many bugs, rednecks, assholes who can't drive, whining liberals, egotistical conservatives, and the humidity will kill you.
I'm moving the hell out of here ASAP. Washington state is gorgeous, cool even in the summer, no bugs, and you can always lock the doors and ignore the liberals, and by god, I'll pay the income tax so that I don't have to pay the 9.75% sales tax of TN. ![]() |

Now as far as the sales tax of 9.75% I just built an XML Web Service that figures sales tax for all 50 states. http://www.vbasic.net/Services/Sales...lesTaxCAL.asmx The primary function of this XML Web Service is to calculate sales tax for any State. You just have to pass it a 2 Char State Code (LA, AR, NY etc.) and Total and it returns a string with the Sales tax or the Grand Total. Now, when I did my research on State Sales Tax Tennessee came up at 7%. Was I mistaken? |
