[OT] Jump charge car battery that isn't in a car?
![]() I know that's what you normally do, but.... I can't get my main car though the narrow gate to jump the dead car I stupidly let sit for a month. So I need to move just the battery and charge it a bit on the booster car. What connection do I need for that? + to + and - to - or + to + and - to grounded metal and I'll post some String Emil for reward |

Have you considered putting the dead car into neutral and pushing it where you can get to it?

It's actually burred in a storage building for the winter. I piled up probably a few thousand pounds of rocks in front of it that came from a pond I tore down. Obviously I should have put them behind the car. I was thinking I could just start the car and run it a bit every couple weeks so it didn't just sit. Let it sit too long....... |

Same as the picture. Newer cars will have an earth point for you to connect to.

Connect to the booster car as in diagram, but hold both ends of cable in hands...
Then walk to the other car, and touch the '+' and '-' terminals with the correct hands... Provided you wear rubber soled shoes, you'll be fine |

I have almost always gone - to -, + to + and have never had an accident.
However you might consider getting a little trickle charger and keep it connected to the car in storage for the winter. That is how I have my bike stored. Works great, always a full charge.

Are you referring to where to put the ground cable that would normally attach to the chassis of the "dead" vehicle? Don't ground it to the "live" vehicle and do not ground it to the "dead" battery for risk of explosion. I'm pretty sure you can use any conductive metal lying around for a ground... just stick it in the Earth.

Dead batteries release hydrogen, so by connecting the negative cable to the terminal on the dead battery you risk an explosion if there is an electrical arc between the positive and negative terminals. To be safe you want to put the ground wire as far as possible away from the positive terminal of the dead battery.

You're going to have to either get a new battery or charge the dead one for at least a day to get it up to par.
You can't let a low battery sit long or it will just go dead again. A new battery will hold a charge much longer so the intervals of you starting the vehicle don't need to be as close. As for connections if you want to try and jump it like that you go + to + and - to - with jumper cables. It will take a while for the amps to build and absorb into the dead battery. That is if it's not too far gone.

My 2c on this is that yes, you can put a charge on the dead batter, either by boosting it or connecting an actual battery charger to it for a time. But here's the thing. You then don't know for sure if it will even hold a charge for long. You might get a vehicle started with that battery, drive somewhere, then find at some point your car won't start.... again. It's a potential headache waiting to plague you.
The better way to go would be to do like someone said. Remove the battery, take it to a service station/center, get them to put a charge on it and make sure they TEST it as well. Once you know it's a still a good battery in every way only then do you bother putting it back into a vehicle. And if the test shows it's a dud, chuck it and buy a new one. And if you do buy a new one don't go with the cheapest cheapass one. Get a decent one that comes with some sort of guarantee. Doesn't have to be the most expensive one either, just a good medium-priced one that does what it's supposed to for as long as it's supposed to (or longer). Btw I don't know where you live but try having battery problems in the middle of winter on the Canadian Prairies. It's a whole new world of hurt on top of the usual frustration let me tell you.

You don't have to hook the negative on the running car to the chassis, just hook them both up normal - to - + to + and it will charge it. It's going to take awhile, prob atleast 30 minutes tho.

Get a jump pack, a battery charger, or unhook the good battery and bring it to the car with the dead battery and jump it. Once it's running, let it run for a while or take it for a drive. The alternator will recharge the battery if it is in fact still good.

Ahh you want to charge the dead battery? If that is the case, just buy yourself a battery charger, they are like $15 and it sounds like you will use it each year

If there is no electric outlet in your building you can get a cheap solar trickle charger too, with a long wire to put it in a window.

Just a suggestion...
1. Take working battery from car outside of gate and put into car inside of gate. 2. Start car inside gate and drive to outside gate where other car is. 3. Put batteries back in appropriate cars 4. Position cars side by side so you can now connect jumper cables and charge dead battery Of course this assumes that these are similar batteries. If not, please see above suggestions by the other fine members of gfy.
